⚡ PUBLIC POWER WEEK 2026 ⚡

One of the things that makes public power special is simple: we’re part of the community we serve.

The people who keep HMP&L running—from our lineworkers and operations team to customer service, administrative staff, and everyone in between—live and work right here in our community.

That local connection matters. Decisions are made with Henderson in mind, with a focus on reliable service, responsible costs, and what is best for the community we all call home.

For 130 years, HMP&L has been proud to serve Henderson as its locally owned public power utility. We’re not just your power provider—we’re your neighbors.

💡 Community Powered. Henderson Proud.

⚡ Local decisions. Local accountability. Community first.

During Public Power Week, we’re highlighting what public power means for Henderson. HMP&L is locally governed and accountable to the community we serve. We operate on a not-for-profit basis, with a focus on reliable service and keeping electricity affordable.

For 130 years, our mission has centered on serving our neighbors, supporting local businesses, and powering Henderson’s future.

Your community. Your utility. Your power. 💡

Thank you to The Hendersonian for highlighting HMP&L’s 130th anniversary luncheon. It was a special opportunity to celebrate the people who have served Henderson for generations and those carrying that work forward today. We’re grateful to our employees, retirees, and community for being part of HMP&L’s story.

HMP&L celebrates its 130th anniversary⬇️

On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 15, 1896, the streets of downtown Henderson were so packed with residents that the newspaper later said it was impossible to move along the sidewalks.

At 7:45 p.m., Mayor A.J. Worsham declared, “Let there be light,” signaling Miss Mariam Starling to press a button that sent electricity to 154 arc street lights, “and there was immediately throughout the city a brilliancy of light … and shouts of approval went up from the throats of a proud and well-pleased people,” the Gleaner reported.

That represented the start of what today is Henderson Municipal Power & Light, which is celebrating its 130th anniversary.

IMPORTANT PSA: REPORT DOWNED LINES TO HMP&L at 888-579-2726.

The storm a couple nights ago caused an uncommon, but NOT impossible, situation in Murray, KY. A broadband support strand snapped, made contact with a secondary electric line, then draped to the ground. When the metal strand made contact with the secondary, it became energized with electricity and hot enough to glow red.

This is a pretty dramatic example of why we encourage everyone to be mindful of downed or low-hanging lines. Downed lines should ALWAYS be treated as ⚠️DANGEROUS⚠️ even if it doesn’t look like an electric line. Cable, telephone, and broadband lines can become energized if they somehow make contact with low-voltage lines. They certainly do not have to be glowing red like this one to be dangerous, or even deadly.

NEVER attempt to move or cross downed lines of any kind!

Today we celebrate the retirement of Michael Newman who has been employed with HMP&L for nearly 31 years.

Michael hired in as an Auxillary/Relief Operator at the former Station 1 power plant in 1995, and closed out his career as Inventory Control Clerk.

We are grateful for Michael’s loyalty to HMP&L and the diligent work he displayed over the years.

He will be missed and we wish him well in his retirement! ✨
