Our friend, Olivia, stopped by this morning with some pork chop dinners for the firefighters. While dropping them off, she was excited to hop in the trucks and knock over a traffic cone with the hose! We had so much fun during her visit!

Today, we would like to honor Firefighter Chad Garrett, who is retiring after twenty years of dedicated service. Although you won’t see him riding our trucks anymore, he will surely stay busy. He is a family man with four children and one grandchild, and he enjoys staying active in our community. For example, over the past several years, his family has opened their home to host several players from the Henderson Flash baseball team.

Throughout his time at the with us, Firefighter Garrett has served the community admirably. If you asked his fellow firefighters about him, you’d hear not only how professionally he conducted himself while on the job, but also how much levity he brought to the job. Engineer Eddie Payne shared that whenever he saw that he and Firefighter Garrett were assigned to the same station (they spent quite a few shifts together over the years ), he knew the shift would be fun. While professional and highly skilled, Firefighter Garrett’s laughter and cheerful nature helped keep the crew in good spirits. We often say that we are a family here, and Firefighter Garrett is truly the embodiment of that spirit.

Assistant Chief Ayron Thompson also praised Chad’s bravery, recounting a memorable story from years past. Firefighter Garrett was off duty, and happened to be near the area where a heavily involved structure fire broke out. From making previous medical responses to that address, Chad knew a disabled young man lived in the home. He drove to the address, and with risk of great peril to himself, went in to help without his any firefighting gear. He arrived at the structure just before the first engines, which were right behind him.

Firefighter Garrett also served with the Henderson Professional Firefighters Honor Guard, which supports the families of fallen firefighters. In addition, he was instrumental in establishing the September 11th memorial at Station 3. We own a piece of a steel floor beam from one of the South Tower which is displayed there. Firefighter Garrett took on the bulk of the paperwork and coordination to ensure the memorial became a reality.

Firefighter Garrett, we deeply appreciate everything you have done for the City of Henderson. Your retirement is well deserved, and we hope this next chapter brings you joy and fulfillment. Thank you again for your service!

Tomorrow is the last day of the 5 day Trench Rescue class at the HFD. There was a lot of involvement from city departments and the community to make this class possible. HWU supplied a vac truck and operator, Charlie and Randy with public works did the excavating, and Hercules Manufacturing Inc. allowed us to use their property, which is adjacent to the our training grounds. Last, but certainly not least, is the outstanding instructors. Jared Peacock and Clayton Tuma from Owensboro Fire Department and Colter Tate from Ohio Township Fire Department provided invaluable instruction that the students will be able to use and pass down to the other members of the three departments in attendance.

This month, we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Firefighter Cameron Gardner.

Firefighter Gardner joined our department a little over a year ago and has already shown a strong commitment to the values we stand by: honor, integrity, and excellence. In that time, he has earned several specialized certifications, including Instructor I, Confined Space Technician, Surface Water Technician, and Driver/Operator. His drive to learn, grow, and serve reflects the commitment we expect from those who are Always Here, Always Ready.

Outside the station, Firefighter Gardner continues to challenge himself both physically and mentally. He recently completed a Half Ironman—an endurance race totaling 70.3 miles, made up of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride, and a 13.1 mile run. It’s an achievement that requires tremendous discipline, grit, and perseverance, qualities he brings with him every day in service to our community.

When he’s not training, he enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

Thank you, Firefighter Gardner. Your dedication and determination embody the standards of honor, integrity, and excellence. We look forward to watching your continued growth and leadership within the department.

Yesterday, Henderson Fire Department assisted with the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Colonel Stadium. It was an honor to climb with students and the public. More importantly, we appreciate the opportunity to dedicate our steps and thoughts to the remembrance of 9/11 and those who have suffered in the decades that have followed. Thank you Colonel Media for putting together this touching video. Thank you, HCHS for welcoming us with open arms into the CTE unit with the Fire/Science Career Pathway. It is an honor to share our love of firefighting with the high school students and to help them to NEVER FORGET!
