National School Bus Safety Week is October 19–23

Did you know an estimated 50,000 vehicles illegally pass stopped school buses in NY every single day? It is illegal - and dangerous - to pass a stopped school bus when the red lights on the bus are flashing.

Reminders for Drivers:
🟡Flashing Yellow Lights: The bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop—do not speed up to pass.
🔴Flashing Red Lights & Extended Stop-Arm: Students are getting on or off. You must stop completely.
⚠️All Lanes Must Stop: Whether you are on a neighborhood street or a multi-lane roadway, drivers traveling in both directions must stop for the flashing red lights.

Thank you for keeping our students safe by staying alert and driving carefully!

WATCH: Oh, what fun the annual PowerPuff game was! Rush-Henrietta Senior High School girls went back in time, competing against one another as members of the Team Burger and Team Roth squads. At the same time, the boys once again played the role of manleaders, cheering on the girls taking part in the flag-football game. It was a great night for this long-standing tradition. WELCOME TO THE ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME!

What a fantastic time we had celebrating the inaugural inductees into the Rush-Henrietta Athletics Hall of Fame! Each inductee was touched to receive the honor this past Friday, and we were thrilled to welcome them back home! Our honorees live as close as Henrietta and as far away as Oregon.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2026 consists of Calvin Betts '06, Kate Faas '05, Jared Gerbino '16, Werner Kleemann, Shenise Johnson, Paul McKee, Bill Smith '67, and Nancy Robb Viola '61. Johnson deferred her induction to next year so she can appear in person for the ceremony.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the first induction ceremony such a success! We are already seeking nominations for next year. Please consider one of our many deserving candidates. Nominate by visiting https://www.rhnet.org/athletics/hall-of-fame today.

Thank you for your support of the Rush-Henrietta Athletics Hall of Fame. And thanks to Janet Cruz Photography for sharing these images with us!

R-H Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony Friday!

Our district's inaugural class of Athletics Hall of Famers will be honored at 5:15 p.m. Friday, October 2, at Werner Kleemann Field at the high school. The entire community is invited to attend this special event that takes place before the homecoming football game.

The Rush-Henrietta Athletics Hall of Fame's Class of 2026 celebrates accomplishments of five outstanding athletes: Calvin Betts, Kate Faas, Jared Gerbino, Shenise Johnson, and Bill Smith. Johnson will appear in person next year to receive her honor, but her selection as a member of the inaugural class remains.

In addition, three legends will be recognized for their role in shaping athletics in R-H and beyond. That trio is Werner Kleemann, Paul McKee, and Nancy Robb Viola.

Come celebrate them with us. See you at 5:15 p.m. Friday, October 2, at Kleemann Field!

District Safety Week

Rush-Henrietta holds District Safety Week twice yearly. The drills include evacuation, lockout, lockdown, and shelter-in-place responses. These state-mandated drills are designed to practice and assess emergency response procedures. This week is our regularly scheduled fall Safety Week, and these drills will be practiced in our elementary and junior high school buildings through this Friday, October 2. However, we will delay some of the drills for the Senior High School until later this fall. Thank you for your patience and support as we complete these important drills.

A Message from Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen
Focus on Safety: Join Us at Two Events This Week

Dear Rush-Henrietta Community,

This past week was challenging in many ways at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School. I want to recap what happened and invite all interested community members to attend two events this week. I recognize the angst and fear many experienced at the high school and resolve to do better. We want to hear from you as we make improvements for the short term and future.

Opportunities to Provide Feedback
First, the Rush-Henrietta Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 29. This meeting will be held in the cafeteria at the Senior High School, 1799 Lehigh Station Road. In addition, the community is invited to a Safety Forum at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 30. This event also will be held at the Senior High School. Both meetings will be livestreamed. Details can be found later in this message.

Here is What Happened
This past Thursday, a fight inside the high school left one student injured. A handful of students arranged in advance for the altercation to occur during the school day. Someone not permitted to be in the building that day was let inside by a student and the fight ensued in a classroom. The scene was recorded and video was shared online. No question, it was disturbing to see.

Hold-in-Place Becomes a Lockdown
Staff initially placed the building in a hold-in-place, a move designed to keep students in their classrooms and out of the hallways while building security and or staff respond to the situation. Deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office arrived on the scene, too. We are thankful for their support.

A staff member heard what sounded like a gunshot and moved the building into lockdown in an effort to further protect everyone inside. The Sheriff's Office has confirmed no shots were fired.

The lockdown lasted for about 40 minutes. Deputies began releasing individual classrooms from lockdown 15 minutes after it was initiated but the process takes time to complete to ensure it is done according to procedure. We know that the silence students and staff experienced contributed to the fear and worry they felt. However, our safety protocols prohibit using the public-address system during a lockdown.

Reflecting on the Aftermath
It wasn’t just one incident last week that left students and staff members unnerved. This was the second fight in two days at the high school. If your student is having a difficult time after the fight or lockdown,or after viewing the disturbing footage, please contact Joe Jackson, director of wellness and equity, at 359-5086 or [email protected]. Counselors will be available at the Senior High School all day Monday to meet with students.

Where Do We Go from Here?
On Friday, some students peacefully walked out during the last period of the day to make their voices heard. Members of the superintendent’s cabinet joined me at the high school to listen.

We will keep listening. We want to hear your concerns and perspectives.

With that in mind, the community is invited to attend the next Board of Education meeting and Safety Forum this week. If you are unable to be there, it will be livestreamed at rhnet.org/forum. (The link will become live on Wednesday.)

You are invited to submit questions in person but also in advance of the forum at rhnet.org/safetyquestions. The Board of Education meeting on Tuesday also will be livestreamed as usual at rhnet.org/liveboard.

On a related note, the district sent a phone call this past Thursday to inform families the school was in lockdown. When classes resumed, the all-clear was sent via email. In the future, when families are told via automated phone call about a lockdown, we will share via phone when the lockdown has ended.

I encourage everyone to continue providing feedback to us. I sincerely hope to see you this week as we continue this important conversation. As always, please also feel comfortable emailing me. I can be reached at [email protected]

Sincerely,

Dr. Barbara Mullen
Superintendent

A Message from Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen

Dear Rush-Henrietta Community,

Over the past few days we have had several incidents of students engaging in altercations at the Senior High School. Despite rumors stating otherwise, I would like to reassure you there were no weapons involved. Monroe County Sheriff's deputies were onsite to help with today’s altercation. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we took this step out of an abundance of caution. We appreciate the way our students, faculty, staff, and administrators responded to today’s event.

Although we have increased security in the building, and have added resources to support students who feel this is the only way to solve conflicts, we know there is more to be done.

The students who make these decisions will be held accountable. Due to student privacy regulations, no further information about those involved can be shared.

As a parent of a student at the Senior High School, I understand this is unnerving to our community. As we reflect on these situations, it doesn’t feel like who we are. I am going to continue to listen to our students, staff, and community to determine how to make sure everyone feels safe and like they belong in Rush-Henrietta.

You can read more about the new supports in place at the Senior High School through our community partners at https://shs.rhnet.org/students/student-supports.

If there are things you think our Board of Education should hear, please plan to attend the next scheduled meeting which will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, at the Parker Administration Building. I also invite you to contact me directly at [email protected].
