Umatilla County Fire District #1 UCFD #1 is the largest, highly-trained paramedic, firefighting, & hazmat team in Eastern OR, responding to over 6,000 calls.

We provide fire, rescue, and paramedic services to the district's citizens, as well as paramedic services to Echo & Umatilla. We are devoted to protecting the communities we serve by providing the highest quality of compassionate and professional services.

When you call 911, you expect help to be there when you need it. But what does it take to make sure highly trained firefighter/EMTs and paramedics are ready to respond around the clock?

As our communities grow and emergency call volumes increase, having enough full-time career personnel ready to respond is more important than ever.

Thanks to a $6.9 million federal FEMA SAFER Grant awarded in 2024, UCFD #1 was able to fund 16 additional firefighter/EMT and paramedic positions over three years.

These 16 positions give our District the staffing needed to operate three stations, work toward meeting national staffing standards, help reduce response times, and provide reliable, high-quality emergency care to our growing communities.

Yesterday, we highlighted our Firefighter/EMTs & Paramedics sharpening their skills in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). 🚑

The second half of the day, crews traded medical equipment for fire hose, focusing on hose deployment to ensure they can stretch hose lines efficiently and get water on the fire when seconds count. 🚒🔥

Every UCFD #1 firefighter is also a certified EMT or Paramedic. That's why our crews train in both fire suppression and emergency medical care. Whether the next call is a medical emergency, structure fire, or something in between, our firefighters need to be ready for it all.

With crews responding to nearly 20 calls a day, training is how we keep our skills sharp and stay prepared to serve our community.

Did you know UCFD #1 is an independent special district?

That means we operate separately from city and county governments and do not receive funding directly from their budgets. Instead, UCFD #1 is funded primarily through property taxes, ambulance billing, and grant funding that we actively pursue to help support District operations.

Our five-member, publicly elected Board of Directors reviews and approves District expenses monthly to ensure responsible use of public funds. UCFD #1 also undergoes an independent financial audit each year and is proud of its history of successful audits.

This morning, your UCFD #1 Firefighter/EMTs & Paramedics are sharpening their lifesaving skills through Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training.

This critical training strengthens our firefighters’ ability to recognize and respond to life-threatening cardiac emergencies, including cardiac arrest and heart attacks. Through continued education and hands-on training, we remain committed to providing the highest level of emergency medical care to our community.

This commitment to training, education, and clinical excellence is one of the reasons we continue to see improvements in cardiac arrest survival rates. Every second matters, and having highly trained firefighters ready to respond makes a difference.

Always training. Always improving. Always ready to save lives.
