The Hesperia Area Fire Department is honored to have received the Newaygo County Emergency Management Service Award in recognition of the department's response during the historic White River flooding in April 2026. Captain Kelvin Roberson and Lieutenant Tim Fraley accepted the award on behalf of the department.
During the flooding, days of heavy rain caused the White River to rise rapidly, sending water over the Hesperia Dam spillway and raising serious concerns the dam could overtop. Emergency officials issued flood watches, prepared for potential evacuations, closed roads and bridges, and worked around the clock to protect residents and property. This award represents far more than the efforts of two individuals. It recognizes the dedication, teamwork, and selfless service of every member of the Hesperia Area Fire Department. We're proud to serve the Village of Hesperia and surrounding communities, and grateful for this meaningful recognition. Congratulations to every member honored on this well-earned award.

Training the last 2 Wednesdays has focused on boat operations and water rescue. Did you know that our coverage area contains 30+ bodies of water? That is why having a boat in our fleet and training on these topics is crucial. Members first spent time familiarizing themselves with the boat and its operation. They then practiced various water rescue techniques including using throw ropes and discs to rescue from shore and methods of getting victims farther out into the boat. As fire fighters and first responders, we must be skilled in many different areas and that means the training and learning never ends. Special thank you to Carl and Jackie Nielsen for the use of their property and pond for these exercises.

Happy 4th July from Hesperia Area Fire Department. It’s been a busy couple days preparing for the festivities by getting trucks shined up for the parade and set up for the water battle. This morning, the station families got together for an annual breakfast to finish preparations. It was great to see everyone who came out for the parade and stayed to watch the water battle. The support from the community is always greatly appreciated and we are proud to serve our hometown.

We have been monitoring river conditions throughout the night. Water levels are currently trending downward; however, runoff from the past several days of rain is still moving through the system.

If you live downstream of the Hesperia Dam, please remain alert and have an evacuation plan in place should conditions change.

Additionally, a dense fog has settled over the area this morning. Use caution during your commute, reduce your speed, and allow extra stopping distance.

Remember: Turn around, don’t drown.

Continue to monitor official channels for updates. Stay safe.

At this time, the water level at the dam is remaining stable.
The following road closures are currently in effect:

Madison Street Bridge east of Green Avenue

Please avoid these areas and continue to monitor official channels for updates. Stay safe.
