Hewlett Fire Department Brings βLittle Fire Heroesβ Fire Safety Program to Franklin Early Childhood Center
Teaching Today's Kids to Be Tomorrow's Fire Safety Heroes!
The Hewlett Fire Department recently visited Franklin Early Childhood Center, bringing fire prevention education to life through an exciting, interactive learning experience for the school's entire student body, from Pre-K through first grade.
As part of the department's βLittle Fire Heroesβ Fire Safety Program, Hewlett's volunteer firefighters and EMS providers spent time teaching students important, age-appropriate lessons about fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and personal safety.
The program focused on helping children recognize potential dangers, make safe choices, and understand what to do in an emergency.
Students learned several important fire safety lessons, including:
- Look, Don't Touch! β Recognizing household items that could cause burns, injuries, or fires and understanding why they should never touch them.
- Know When to Call 911! β Learning how and when to call for emergency assistance.
- Stop, Drop, and Roll! β Practicing what to do if their clothing catches fire.
- Hear the Beep, Get Out! β Recognizing smoke alarm sounds and understanding the importance of leaving the building immediately.
- Get Out and Stay Out! β Learning to escape safely, meet at a designated location, and never reenter a burning building.
- Firefighters Are Our Friends! β Understanding that firefighters wearing protective equipment are there to help, not frighten them.
One of the highlights of the visit was meeting Firefighter Steve, who introduced the children to the protective clothing, breathing equipment, and tools firefighters use during emergencies.
Students learned that although a firefighter wearing full protective gear may look or sound unfamiliar, there is a friendly firefighter underneath who is there to protect and help them.
This important lesson helps reduce children's fears and encourages them to recognize, trust, and seek help from firefighters during emergencies.
The excitement continued as students had the opportunity to tour a Hewlett Fire Department fire engine, see firefighting equipment up close, and learn how firefighters use their trucks and tools to keep the community safe.
Franklin Early Childhood Center became the first school to experience the department's new simulated smoke and crawl house!
This interactive educational tool provides children with an opportunity to practice safely crawling low beneath simulated smoke and navigating toward an exit.
The Hewlett Fire Department is proud to be a 100% volunteer organization, made up of dedicated community members who give their time to protect their neighbors. Our commitment to the community extends far beyond answering emergency calls. We believe that preventing emergencies through education is just as important as responding to them.
The fire safety fun doesn't stop at school!
