It’s National Sewing Month and we have several books on display that you might find interesting! Pick up Star Quilts, Outside the Box, which is volume 3, featuring hexagon patterns from the Kansas City Star. Another interesting book is The American Quilt, the history of Cloth and Comfort 1750-1950. For more than 200 years, American women have been sharing their hopes and dreams, their fears and frustrations, through the patterns they intricately sew. Learn about the evolution of quilting in 18th and 19th century America. This book also provides helpful information on displaying, storing and caring for quilts.
Also displayed are some fun fiction books with a theme of sewing or quilting. Pick up The Museum of Lost Quilts, by Jennifer Chiaverini. This is an Elm Creek Quilts novel. Another fiction piece is by Isis Crawford titled A Catered Quilting Bee, which is a mystery with recipes!
September is also National Literacy Month, and we have a display dedicated to that as well. National Literacy Month is celebrated to raise awareness of reading. It’s as simple as reading a newspaper, a magazine, or grab a novel to become engrossed in - any genre will do - just read! Good ways to celebrate National Literacy Month include reading out loud to a child for at least 20 minutes a day, visiting your local library to get a free library card to check out books or donate some to schools or charities.
Some other displays include “Fall Into a Good Book,” with featured fall-themed titles, “Fabulous Fall Finds,” “A Harves of Good Reading,” and “Fall In Love With a Good Movie,” featuring romance DVDs.
