Some traditions are too good to forget.

Long before food trucks and modern-day fundraisers, the Hiddenite Volunteer Fire Department had a popular tradition that brought firefighters and the community together over a simple favorite: country ham biscuits.

It was called “Ham Day.”

Newspaper clippings from the 1970s tell the story of a time when the fire department held Ham Biscuit Days and Ham Suppers as fundraisers. In 1972, the department served approximately 350 pounds of country ham at its annual Ham Supper and raised $1,000 for the fire department. For a small volunteer fire department in the 1970s, that was a tremendous show of community support.

Now, the Hiddenite Volunteer Fire Department is bringing a little piece of that tradition back. The department has been serving country ham biscuits at the Hiddenite Celebration in recent years, and this year firefighters want to celebrate the history behind them even more.

During this year's Hiddenite Celebration, visitors can stop by the Hiddenite Volunteer Fire Department's booth behind Family Dollar and enjoy a good old-fashioned country ham biscuit for just $4 each. We'll be serving them beginning at 6:30 a.m. and throughout the day—until they're sold out! And you won't have to look far to find us. Just look for the big yellow fire trucks!

It's more than just a ham biscuit. It's a small taste of a tradition that helped support the fire department decades ago—and a reminder of the strong community spirit that has always been at the heart of Hiddenite's volunteer fire service.

Country ham. A biscuit. A Hiddenite tradition.

Come early, come hungry, support your local volunteer firefighters, and taste a little piece of Hiddenite history!

Fire damages Hiddenite home --
