PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY:

Check Your Home Heating Fuel to Prevent Furnace Backfires before this cold weather gets here.

As cooler temperatures arrive, the Borough of High Bridge Fire Department reminds all residents to inspect their heating systems before firing them up for the season.

A sudden surge or "backfire" in a fuel-fired furnace can happen when burners are forced to ignite under improper conditions, such as running out of fuel completely or using stale, contaminated oil. This can cause a delayed ignition, resulting in a small explosion that forces smoke, soot, and dangerous gases into your living space.

Protect your home and family this winter by following these critical furnace safety steps:
• Check Your Fuel Levels: Avoid letting your oil or propane tank run completely empty. Running out of fuel can pull sludge and sediment from the bottom of the tank into your fuel lines, clogging filters and causing dangerous burner misfires.
• Schedule an Annual HVAC Inspection: Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your heating equipment, lines, and vents every year to ensure everything is functioning efficiently and safely.
• Clear the Area: Keep all combustible materials—including boxes, paper, fabric, and cleaning supplies—at least 3 feet away from your furnace and water heaters.
• Test Your Detectors: Ensure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home. Fuel-burning appliances pose a hidden risk of carbon monoxide poisoning if they malfunction or experience backdrafting.
If you smell heavy smoke, gas, or suspect a fire, evacuate the building immediately and dial 9-1-1 to reach emergency services.

And always remember to clean your chimney!

Interesting stuff.

On this day, Peter Stuyvesant—New Amsterdam’s hard-nosed director-general—organized what is widely recognized as America’s first volunteer fire service. In a wooden port town where a stray ember could take the whole colony, Stuyvesant’s move wasn’t just prudent; it was survival policy. He required homes to keep leather fire buckets at the ready and set up a “rattle watch,” volunteers who patrolled the streets at night with hand rattles to raise the alarm. A lesser-known twist: he funded the effort with fines from chimney neglect and a tavern tax, channeling everyday commerce into public safety.

That early bucket brigade helped New Amsterdam evolve into a city that took urban risk seriously—laying groundwork for professional departments, building codes, and the civic norm that neighbors run toward danger together. From those rattles and buckets to modern rigs and hydrants, America’s fire service traces a straight line back to Stuyvesant’s practical, if strict, vision for a safer community.
