Build a kit.
We know how to keep our loved ones safe when things go wrong, but do you have what you need to stay safe and comfortable until help arrives? You may think building a well-stocked emergency kit is difficult or expensive, but it doesn’t need to be. You can gather supplies over time, starting with items you may already have at home like canned food and first aid supplies. Visit https://www.washingtoncountyor.gov/take5/emergency-supplies for a list of items to include and tips on tailoring your kit to your family’s needs.

Today, three of our own had the honor of representing Hillsboro Fire & Rescue at Feria Tu Salud 2026, teaching Hands-Only CPR entirely in Spanish.

Lt. Mota, FF Marquez, and FF Barrios spent time day showing community members how to recognize a cardiac arrest emergency, start CPR, and why calling 911 first helps get responders on the way.

Thanks to Telemundo Portland for organizing the event, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Senior Center for hosting, our community partners, and the Hillsboro community for welcoming us in and taking the time to learn something that can save a life.

Opportunities like this — sharing life-saving safety information in Spanish with our Latino community — mean a great deal to us, and we're grateful every time we get to show up for it.

Want to see more from today? Visit Telemundo Portland page for their interview with Lt. Mota.

Recruits pushed, tested, and bringin' it.

Our 26-1 recruits have been putting in serious work over the past five weeks—and having a good time doing it.

On the fire side, they tackled forcible entry and building construction, ran hydrant and hose evolutions, and stepped into live fire training on a vehicle fire. They also worked ropes, knots, and truck operations.

On the medical side, recruits built core EMS skills: patient assessment, airway management, and blood glucose checks; the fundamentals that let a firefighter walk into someone's worst day with calm and competence.

Mix in PT, teamwork, and a few laughs along the way, and you've got a crew earning every bit of readiness they'll carry into this career. This is how we build professional firefighters. Hillsboro Firefighters City of Hillsboro - Local Government

Last night, we got to be part of something special in our community.

Firefighter Marquez and the crew from Engine 1 joined Bienestar and the Hillsboro Police Department for a community safety night, presenting fire safety information in Spanish to families right here in Hillsboro.

Firefighter Marquez brought his A-game, walking families through smoke alarm basics, how to build a home escape plan (Get Low & Go!), and important safety tips around lithium-ion batteries (think e-bikes, scooters, and phone chargers). Afterward, the kids and more than a few parents got an up-close look at Engine 1.

Nights like this are exactly why we do this work. Huge thanks to Bienestar and the Hillsboro Police Department for the invitation and for bringing us together with the community, and to every family who came out, asked questions, and welcomed us in. We loved every minute of it.

Knots: not glamorous, absolutely essential.

Our recruit firefighters spent time this week learning the rope work every firefighter needs: tying, dressing, and securing knots until they can do them right, every time.

It might not look as dramatic as flowing a hoseline, but the fire service runs on the basics. Whether it's hoisting tools, securing equipment, or anchoring a line, a knot that's tied wrong can fail when it matters most. Our training staff knows that, so they're right there at the recruits' elbows, coaching one loop and one wrap at a time.

Proud of the focus and attention to detail this group brings to every skill, even the ones that look simple. Those small skills add up, and the community relies on them when it counts. Hillsboro Firefighters City of Hillsboro - Local Government

None of this looks glamorous from the outside — but every rep, every hose lay, and every early-morning PT session builds the muscle memory that keeps our crews and our community safe when it matters most.

Our newest recruit firefighters have spent the past two weeks building the foundation that every call depends on: SCBA donning and doffing under time pressure, fire hose deployment, advancing hoselines through structures, and flowing charged lines while on the move.

None of this looks glamorous from the outside — but every rep, every hose lay, every early-morning PT session is building the muscle memory that keeps our crews and our community safe when it matters most.

Proud of the discipline, teamwork, and grit this group brings every single day. This is just the beginning.
