Yesterday afternoon, Shoal Creek Fire Department in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, "almost had deja vu, all over again", when a brush fire of unknown origin threatened several acres including harvested field and standing corn. Chief Caulk quickly called in the reinforcements. Shoal Creek, Mulberry Grove, Hillsboro, Witt, Fillmore, Taylor Springs, Coffeen, Greenville, Montgomery County Sheriff's Dept and EMA responded to assist. Thankfully, because of the rapid response of these departments and some quick acting farmers, the blaze was contained without loss of property or lives. The point is, don't burn, the crops are dry and the soil is like powered cocoa. There is no residual moisture. Any small fire can grow quickly and get out of control. Even a small trash fire can get out of control quickly!

PUBLIC NOTICE – HONEY BEND AVENUE BRIDGE CLOSURE

Montgomery County Emergency Management was made aware by the Montgomery County Highway Department of a road closure occurring midday today.

A routine bridge inspection was conducted today by the State of Illinois. As a result of that inspection, the bridge on Honey Bend Avenue between E. Frontage Road and E. 4th Road has been ordered closed until the bridge replacement can be completed.

At this time, it is undetermined how long the bridge will remain closed. We ask residents, campers, and visitors who are affected by the closure to please be patient while the necessary work is completed.

For those needing to access the campground or other locations east of the bridge, the recommended alternate route is:

18th Avenue → E. 4th Road → Travel south to Honey Bend Avenue

Motorists are strongly discouraged from using 17th Avenue as an alternate route due to a narrow, low-clearance bridge in that area.

Please use caution, allow additional travel time, and follow all posted closure and detour signs.

Montgomery County Emergency Management, the Montgomery County Highway Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Montgomery County EMA was asked to assist with the 37th annual Tour De Donut Bicycle race today. Our agency was asked to help with traffic control in the Montgomery County side of the race and supplied the command post trailer for Race Control. They had over 800 participants and did a great job organizing it even in the rain! I would like to thank the EMA volunteers (Doug White, Mark Lewis and his grandson Dean, Darryl Edwards and Dave Beal) as well as members of the Montgomery County Macoupin County and Lewis and Clark Amateur Radio Clubs for spending their time helping others!

At about 6:15 PM this evening on July 10 the Village of Donnellson experienced a severe storm that produced some high winds that may have also included some rotation that stayed aloft. This system damaged several large trees and broke several large limbs out of trees. Most of the damage was on the eastern side of the village. At this time there have been no reports of damage to homes or any injuries . There have been some reports of damage to the crops east of town.
