Brush-burning season is here, and we've already had a few close calls!
Outdoor Burning Reminders:
• 🌬️ Check burn bans and weather. If winds exceed 10 mph, wait!
• 🔥 Keep piles small and away from woods, buildings, and fences.
• 💧 Keep water, a shovel, and a phone nearby. Never leave a fire unattended.
• 🕗 Follow permitted burning hours and fully extinguish your fire.
📋 Burn permits are required October 15–May 15 for leaf and brush piles. Get yours FREE at BurnSafeTN.org.
🚨 If your fire gets away, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY! We'd rather come early than late.

On Sunday crews were dispatched to the 126MM on Interstate 24 for a CMV (Commercial Motor Vehicle) fire. The caller reported he noticed his trailer on fire, pulled over and disconnected his tractor. The fire spread rapidly and had non-hazardous cargo on board.

Hillsboro Volunteer Fire responded to a CMV (Commercial Vehicle Fire) on Saturday morning on I-24. Our members were leaving a public relations event and were on the scene quickly. Our Engine 1 was shortly behind them. The driver used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire and a booster reel was used to hit hot spots. Thanks to the help from THP and CCSO for keeping the traffic off the firefighters working.

🚨 POP QUIZ: Does everyone in your house know where to meet if the smoke alarm goes off?** 🤔🔥

You may have less than 2 minutes to escape a home fire. Don't wait until an emergency to make a plan!

🏠 Your family's fire safety homework this month:
1. 🚪 Find TWO ways out of every bedroom. A door and an accessible window can make all the difference!
2. 📍 Choose an outdoor meeting spot. It could be the mailbox, a big tree, or a neighbor's house.
3. 🏃 Practice your escape plan! Make it a family activity and practice getting outside quickly.

🐶 BONUS POINTS: Make sure everyone knows how to get their pets out safely, too!

⚠️ Remember: Once you're outside, STAY outside! Never go back in for people, pets, or belongings. Call 911 from a safe location.

A few minutes of practice today could save lives tomorrow. ❤️

Cooking Safety - #1 Cause of Home Fires
Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S., and most are preventable.

Tips to Prevent Cooking Fires:
• NEVER leave anything cooking unattended - stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling. If you leave, turn it off.
• Keep flammables 3+ feet from the stove - towels, paper towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and curtains.
• Turn pot handles inward to prevent accidental spills and burns, and keep kids and pets 3 feet away from the cooking area.
• Keep a proper-fitting lid nearby - slide a lid over a pan fire and turn off the burner. Never use water on a grease fire.
• For oven fires, keep the door closed and turn it off. For a microwave fire, keep door closed and unplug if safe.
• Have a working smoke alarm in or near the kitchen and keep a small ABC fire extinguisher accessible.
If the fire is too large, get out, close the door behind you, and call 911.
Stay safe, stay prepared.

⏰🔋 Change Your Clocks? Check Your Alarms!
It's almost that time again, Hillsboro! When you set your clocks back for daylight savings, take an extra 30 seconds and press that test button on your smoke alarms too.
We make it easy to remember: Twice a year when the clocks change, check your alarms.
• Spring forward - check 'em
• Fall back - check 'em
If it's chirping, blinking, or more than 10 years old, it's telling you something ->Swap it out.
Need a hand or a new alarm? Swing by Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department or give us a call!
