Dismal Swamp State Park is a NC treasure—located in Camden county— provides access to the largest remaining swamp in the eastern U.S. It doesn’t feel like a swamp at all. We rent kayaks to visitors who can paddle a beautiful historic canal. The area has deep cultural and historical significance that intertwines with George Washington, the Underground Railroad, and Prohibition. While there we also ran into our researchers with NC Museum of Natural Sciences who were studying crayfish in the area. Great day in the park!

Located in Vance and Warren counties, Kerr Lake State Recreation Area offers visitors eight different access areas around the vast shoreline that encompasses this 50,000-acre reservoir. You may notice the water levels are low, that is due to the ongoing drought - we even saw a watermelon growing on one of the beaches. Superintendent Stanley pointed out the moss line on a tree where water previously reached during last year’s flood, this season is definitely drier. The hiking trails are open and with such stellar weather, it’s a stunning spot to get outside.

Many thanks to the Kerr Lake team for showing me around and for the great work they’re doing there.

It was an honor to kick-off America 250 at Carolina, a week of history programming The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by moderating a panel with some of the most prolific historians in the state. It takes a village to share our country’s complex history and how our government came to be. Thank you to all who came out!

Partnerships are critical to conserving NC’s iconic watersheds. We joined several of our partners on the Black River and the Three Sisters Swamp to see the results of some important conservation collaborations—including preservation of the ecosystem for some of the oldest trees east of the Rockies. Some of these trees are over 2,000 years old. A huge thank you to The Nature Conservancy in NC and the Coharie Tribe for hosting us.
