Second Helpings Second Helpings is a nonprofit food rescue & distribution network, striving to eliminate hunger in the SC Lowcountry. Hunger has a local address.

Each year, we collect and distribute some 3 million lbs of food. We are a funded UWLC (United Way of the Lowcountry) partner agency. One in seven people, and one in five children in South Carolina, struggle with hunger. Our 300 volunteers supply 50 nonprofit food pantries, soup kitchens, agencies and churches in Beaufort, Hampton and Jasper counties. Together, we provide more than 2.3 million meals per year to feed our local hungry.

We continued our annual agency conference series in Hampton County, spending time with the local partners who are on the front lines of serving families across the community.

These conversations give us a chance to share what we are seeing around food insecurity, hear directly from our agency partners about changing needs, and talk about how we can respond together as a stronger network.

We are grateful for the organizations that continue to show up, share openly, and work alongside us. Their local knowledge, relationships, and commitment make this work stronger and help ensure more neighbors have access to the food and resources they need.

Healthy food makes a real difference.

Thank you to Friends of Callawassie for supporting Second Helpings’ Healthy Food Initiative.

Their support allows us to purchase fresh produce, proteins, and other nutritious foods from local and regional sources, supporting our farmers while making healthy food more accessible to pantry partners and families across the Lowcountry.

We appreciate Friends of Callawassie for investing in a stronger, healthier community.

Celebrating 9 Years of Partnership!

For nine years, Second Helpings and Palmetto Breeze Transit have been working together to make sure hardworking neighbors in the Southern Lowcountry have access to fresh, nutritious food.

Through our Fill the Need program, we provide food to Palmetto Breeze riders who commute to and from work, helping ease the burden of grocery costs and making life a little easier for the people who keep our community moving.

What makes this partnership so special isn't just the food we deliver each week. It's the relationships we have built, the lives we have touched, and the shared commitment to showing up for our neighbors.

Thank you to our friends at Palmetto Breeze for nine wonderful years of partnership! We are grateful for all we have accomplished together and look forward to many more.

A mission moment from St. Andrew’s Kitchen. 🧡

Mary Jane Solomon and her dedicated team of volunteers prepare and distribute 210 hot meals every week, with meals reaching neighbors through The Agape Family Life Center Hardeeville and Mercy Mission, two of Second Helpings’ partner agencies.

It is a powerful reminder that this work is never done by one organization alone. It takes pantries, volunteers, food donors, community partners, and agencies working together to make sure food reaches the people who need it.

Seeing that collaboration in action is what makes this network so special.

Thank you, Mary Jane, and everyone at St. Andrew’s Kitchen for the care you put into every meal and for being such an important part of this community effort.

Our volunteers are at the heart of Second Helpings.

Every October, we take time to celebrate the people who make food rescue possible, gathering together at volunteer appreciation events to recognize the dedication, compassion and countless hours they give to our community.

Watch Board President Mary Ann Bell and Board Vice President Alan George on WHHI-TV as they share why our volunteers are so essential. From collecting donated food to delivering it to our nonprofit partners, their efforts help ensure good food reaches neighbors who need it most.

Thank you to our more than 500 volunteers for showing up, pitching in and making a difference, one delivery at a time.

What happens when a community comes together to shop with purpose? More than $90,000 raised for local nonprofits.

We are incredibly thankful to Spartina for including Second Helpings as one of the beneficiaries of its 2026 Warehouse Sale, alongside Volunteers in Medicine HHI, Sea Turtle Patrol HHI, and the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation.

And to everyone who bought a ticket, came out to shop, and supported the event, thank you. Your participation turned a fun weekend into meaningful support for organizations working throughout the Lowcountry.

Congratulations to Spartina 449 on a record-breaking year, and thank you for continuing to give back to the community we all call home.

Meet John, Steve, and Tim. 🧡

These three members of the Knights of Columbus recently started a team that will spend one morning each month volunteering with Second Helpings.

It is a simple commitment, but one that adds up. A few hours on the truck means more food rescued, more deliveries made, and more support reaching local pantry partners.

We love seeing groups find a way to serve that works for them.

If your church, business, civic group, or group of friends wants to jump in for a morning each week or month, we would love to have you.

Celebrating the people behind the mission.

At our Hilton Head Volunteer Appreciation event, we had the opportunity to recognize several incredible volunteers whose time, energy, and commitment make Second Helpings stronger every day.

🚚 Bob Rooney, Truck Volunteer of the Year, is a regular Tuesday driver who is always willing to step in when another crew needs a hand. From food rescue routes to fresh food distributions, Bob continues to show up wherever he is needed.

🧡 Phil Zitello, Non-Truck Volunteer of the Year, joined Second Helpings in 2025 and quickly became someone we could count on, both on the trucks and at our Healthy Food Initiative and Fresh Xpress distributions.

👏 David and Linda Sonato, New Volunteers of Excellence, have become a driving force behind our Tourist Food Rescue program, reliably taking the van out each Monday to rescue food left behind by visitors and get it to neighbors who can use it.

Every award represents so much more than one day of recognition. It represents early mornings, miles driven, food lifted and loaded, and countless moments of simply saying, “I can help.”

Congratulations to Bob, Phil, David, and Linda, and thank you to all of our Hilton Head volunteers for everything you do for Second Helpings and our community.

Play Pickleball. Fight Hunger. Make the Holidays Brighter! 🦃

A little friendly competition can make a BIG difference for our Lowcountry neighbors!

The Lowcountry Pickleball Tournament is returning November 7–8 at Burton Wells Pickleball Complex, with all proceeds benefiting Second Helpings and helping provide holiday meals to families facing food insecurity.

But we need your help to make it happen! Registration closes October 16, and enough players must sign up for the tournament to move forward. Every registration brings us closer to putting holiday meals on our neighbors’ tables!

🏓 Saturday, November 7: Men’s Doubles
🏓 Sunday, November 8: Women’s Doubles
🏓 Age divisions: 50–64 and 65+

Not a pickleball player? You can still make a difference! Even a $5 donation helps support our mission.

A huge thank you to the tournament organizers and everyone coming together to support Second Helpings. Because hunger doesn’t take a holiday, and neither does our community’s generosity!

We are incredibly thankful to Palmetto Electric Trust for a grant that will help Second Helpings expand our services and reach more people in these communities.

As food insecurity continues to affect thousands of neighbors across the Lowcountry, this investment will help us strengthen our presence in Jasper and Hampton counties and work more closely with local partners to get food where it is needed most.

Thank you, Palmetto Electric Trust, for investing in this work and in the communities we serve.
