Single Vehicle Crash with Extrication

July 22nd, 2026

At 0719 hrs, Hindman Vol. Fire Rescue responded to a single-vehicle crash on Possum Trot Road in which a vehicle left the roadway, traveled over an embankment, and came to rest in a creek.

Due to the vehicle’s position and limited working space, firefighters performed vehicle extrication to gain safe access to the patient. Once access was established, the patient was removed from the vehicle and transported by Perry County EMS to Hazard ARH for evaluation and treatment of injuries.

Training never stops at Hindman FD

Recently, members of Hindman Fire Department and Rescue completed a Low Angle Rope Rescue class taught by Hindman firefighter and State Fire Rescue Training instructor Cruz Adams . During the training, firefighters learned and practiced several rope rescue techniques, including the use of 3:1 and 5:1 mechanical advantage hauling systems.

These systems allow rescuers to move heavy loads using less manpower by multiplying the force applied to the rope. This training is especially valuable in our area, where steep terrain, narrow roadways, and frequent flooding can create challenging rescue situations. In addition to vehicle-over-embankment incidents, these rope rescue skills are also critical during swift water emergencies.

Thank you to State Fire Rescue Training District 12 for an excellent training opportunity.

Hindman firefighters recently sharpened their skills in water supply by completing a rural water supply training. The training utilized creek pumps and dump tanks for drafting to maintain a continuous water supply. These operations are commonly used in areas with limited fire hydrant access.

Thank you to State Fire Rescue Training District 12 for the excellent class. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a firefighter, now is the time. Stop by one of our Monday night meetings at 6:00 PM and see what we’re all about.
