🚨 SCAM ALERT – PLEASE SHARE! 🚨

The Summers County Sheriff’s Office has recently been made aware of a scam circulating in our area involving individuals falsely claiming to represent Publishers Clearing House (PCH).

We want to remind everyone that Publishers Clearing House will NEVER require you to pay fees, taxes, or make purchases to enter a sweepstakes or collect a prize.

Legitimate winners are notified in person by the famous PCH Prize Patrol or through certified or express mail.

Unfortunately, scammers often use official-looking documents, fake checks, government seals, and promises of large cash prizes to convince victims that they have won money. The documents pictured below are examples of what these scams can look like.

⚠️ PLEASE REMEMBER:

* Never send money to someone claiming you must pay to receive a prize.
* Never provide personal or banking information to someone you do not know or trust.
* Be suspicious of anyone requesting payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or other unusual methods.
* If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!

These scams frequently target our elderly population, and unfortunately, many victims lose thousands of dollars before realizing they have been deceived.

We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to talk with their parents, grandparents, elderly neighbors, and loved ones about these scams. A simple conversation could prevent someone from losing their hard-earned savings.

Please share this post to help us protect the citizens of Summers County.

If you believe you or someone you know has been targeted by a scam, please contact the Summers County Sheriff’s Office.

Setup for Railroad Days will officially begin tomorrow, Thursday, October 8, 2026, at noon.

Please move all personal vehicles out of restricted parking zones before setup begins. If vehicles remain in restricted areas and we are unable to locate the owners to have them moved, those vehicles will be subject to towing.

PLEASE DO NOT MOVE OR REMOVE SIGNS OR BARRICADES. All signs and barricades placed throughout town are considered traffic control devices. Tampering with a traffic control device is illegal, and unauthorized individuals should not move, remove, or reposition them. These devices have been placed for the safety of pedestrians, motorists, and parked vehicles during the event. Please obey all signs and follow the detour routes accordingly.

PLEASE USE EXTRA CAUTION WHILE DRIVING THROUGH TOWN. There will be significantly more pedestrians, vehicles, and activity throughout town. Please pay close attention to traffic signs, detour signs, barricades, and other traffic control devices. Slow down, stay alert, and watch for pedestrians.

Let’s all be safe, and enjoy another year of our beautiful City tradition

As we prepare for this year’s Train Days Festival, please keep the following in mind:

Roadways will be closed, and original traffic patterns will be altered. Exercise caution while traveling through uptown Hinton, as there will be many people out to enjoy the festival.

For those coming to Hinton via I-64 Eastbound, please note that Exit 139 is still closed due to construction. You will need to continue to Exit 143 and take Route 20 back to Sandstone or use White Oak Road to reach the town.

Thank you,
Team 900

🚔 HIDE AND SEEK: ROOKIE EDITION 🚔

Yesterday, Ronald Ward apparently decided that home confinement was getting a little too… confining.

Mr. Ward allegedly cut off his home confinement bracelet and decided to start an unscheduled game of hide and seek with law enforcement. Several deputies spent yesterday searching throughout Summers County, but Mr. Ward managed to stay hidden.

Today, Sheriff Faris received information that Mr. Ward had been spotted in Mercer County and was believed to be traveling toward the Pipestem area of Summers County.

After several hours of surveillance and searching, our two newest deputies — Deputy Lowry and Deputy Starcher — spotted the vehicle Mr. Ward was reportedly driving.

Apparently nobody told Mr. Ward that the rookies were tired of playing hide and seek. 😂

Once additional deputies arrived on scene, Mr. Ward was taken into custody without incident.

So, congratulations to Deputies Lowry and Starcher on tracking down their man and putting their first escapee arrest in the books. Not a bad way for the new guys to make their presence known. 👏🚔

Mr. Ward now faces an escape charge, as well as a new charge of Driving Revoked for DUI — 3rd Offense.

Rookies: 1
Hide-and-Seek Champion: 0

Welcome to Team 900, boys. Looks like you’re settling in just fine. 😂

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
