As Winter approaches, we want to discuss a couple topics regarding our planning and preparedness for severe Winter weather.
Warming Stations - These shelters are limited hour locations opened when there are extremely cold temperatures, especially when coupled with power outages. They do not offer overnight accommodations. We currently have the following locations that can be opened for this purpose:
Forest Hill Fire Department - 16166 Route 12 Forest Hill, WV 24935
Talcott Fire Department - 263 Pat Ball Road Talcott, WV 24981
Sandstone Missionary Baptist Church - 25 Honaker Road, Sandstone, WV 25985
Summers County Memorial Building - 451 1st Avenue Hinton, WV 25951
Pence Springs Community Church - 8195 State Route 3 and 12 Pence Springs, WV 24962
We are looking for additional locations to use as warming stations. Please contact us if you have a Church, building, or business and we can discuss setting up a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) .
We have one location in Summers County for use as an overnight / multi-day shelter. This shelter can provide sleeping arrangements, food, drinks, medical assistance, and showers. Transportation to this location can be provided. This shelter will be opened with the assistance of our agency and the American Red Cross.
Summers County Memorial Building - 451 1st Avenue Hinton, WV 25951
Opening announcements will made on this page, along with local media outlets that include Classic Hits 98.3FM, WVNSTV 59, WVVA 6, and WJLS 99.5FM.
Volunteers - Being a rural low-population County, there is always a need for volunteers to assist in disaster situations. If you are interested in volunteering your time and knowledge, There are a couple ways to do so:
1. Sign up to volunteer with the American Red Cross - They offer free training in many fields related to disaster services, and always have a need for volunteers. The Red Cross assists our agency heavily in Summers County. You can sign up here: https://www.redcross.org/local/west-virginia/volunteer.html
2. Contact Director Lowry at [email protected] and we can get you onto our list of volunteer resources.
3. Previously, Summers County had a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). If there is interest in standing this team back up, please let Director Lowry know via email. FEMA training courses are free, and can be done at your own progress online.
