🎃 Things are getting spooky around the Nature Center! 👻

Our animal ambassadors have been getting festive with their pumpkins, but these seasonal surprises are more than just decorations — they’re enrichment! 🐍🐢

Animal enrichment is an important part of animal care in managed care settings. It encourages natural behaviors, stimulates curiosity, provides opportunities to explore and interact with their environment, and helps keep animals mentally and physically engaged.

So while our pumpkins may look spooky, they serve an important purpose: keeping our animal ambassadors curious, active, and engaged! 🧡

🐢 THE TOTALS ARE IN! 🥚🎉

That’s a wrap on the 2026 sea turtle nesting season at Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge Beach, and we have a few record-breakers to celebrate!

🏆 Leatherbacks: 189 nests — a new record, surpassing last year’s record of 183!

🏆 Loggerheads: 2,334 nests — another record-breaking season, topping the previous record of 2,300 set in 2023!

💚 Green turtles: 1,624 nests — an encouraging total in a year when lower nesting numbers were anticipated. Nesting numbers naturally fluctuate from year to year, so we’re hopeful for an even stronger season in 2027!

A huge thank-you to all the organizations, partners, and individuals working to protect these incredible animals and their nesting habitat. Every nest counts! 🌊

💬 YOUR TURN: Which sea turtle nesting total surprised you the most? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Bring the family, come in costume if you’d like, and get ready for a fun night of creepy creatures and Halloween fun. 🕷️🦇

We’ll see you there! 🎃

🌿 Volunteer of the Month: Ryder! 🌿

In just a few short months, Ryder has already made a lasting impression at Hobe Sound Nature Center.

A Martin County native, Ryder first connected with the Nature Center through our Summer Nature Camp at age 8. Since then, his love for wildlife and conservation has continued to grow, and he has become a wonderful part of our volunteer team.

Ryder has a natural ability to connect with others and share his love of the natural world. Whether he’s talking with visitors or sharing his knowledge of wildlife, he has a way of making people feel welcome and curious about the world around them. 🐊🌿

Some of his favorite Nature Center memories so far include Opal’s Opossum Party and getting to hold a baby alligator!

Outside of the Nature Center, Ryder enjoys travel baseball and fishing.

We’re so grateful to have Ryder on our team and can’t wait to see where his love of wildlife and conservation takes him. Thank you, Ryder, for bringing your enthusiasm and kindness to the Nature Center! 💚

Help us congratulate Ryder! 👏

Our International Coastal Cleanup crew showed up ready to get sweaty and get their hands dirty, and together we removed 513 lbs of trash from the Nathaniel P. Reed Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.

International Coastal Cleanup is a global effort to remove marine debris from coastlines and collect data on the types of trash found in our oceans and waterways. That information helps us make informed decisions and work toward solutions to this problem.

We even had the opportunity to make this year’s cleanup a little more sustainable by reusing barley bags through Keep Martin Beautiful’s partnership with a local brewery. ♻️

We’re so grateful to everyone who spent their Saturday morning caring for this special place, and a big thank you to Keep Martin Beautiful for partnering with us and providing cleanup supplies! 💙
