Main Library Temporary Closure | November 4, 2026 – January 31, 2027

Hoboken Public Library's Main Library will temporarily close beginning November 4, with the second and third floors expected to reopen February 1, 2027.

Our historic Main Library is undergoing a year-long restoration of its first floor and mezzanine. Since reopening the upper floors on October 5, we've found that construction downstairs has been more disruptive to daily operations than anticipated. For the well-being of the public and staff, we've decided to temporarily close the building while this work continues.

The restoration remains on schedule, and library services will continue at alternative locations and through curbside pickup and our digital collections.

Here's how you can continue using the Library:

📚Curbside pickup: Borrow books by appointment at 256 Fifth Street, next to the Main Library. Call (201) 420-2346 ext. 5102.
📍 Grand Street Library Branch: Visit us at 124 Grand Street, with extended hours.
💻 Computer access: Available at the Learning Center, 401 Harrison Street, Monday through Saturday.
📕 24/7 book lockers: Pick up your holds anytime.
📱 Ebooks and audiobooks: Available through our digital collections.
👩‍👧‍👦 Children's programs: Continuing at Grand Street, with additional locations being arranged.

We know this closure will be disappointing, especially so soon after reopening. Restoring a National Register-listed historic landmark takes time, care, and sometimes adjustments along the way.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work toward a beautifully restored, more accessible and welcoming Main Library for generations to come.

Look who’s in Good Housekeeping! 📚✨

Good Housekeeping invited our librarians to nominate books for their 2026 Kids’ Book Awards. Our team suggested new titles for babies through age 12, and Good Housekeeping tested the nominees with more than 125 kid and teen reviewers. After 225+ books were read and rated, 54 winners made the final list, from board books to middle-grade mysteries, including a punny tale about mac and cheese and a board book that turns into a night-light.

Heading to the Main Library? The main entrance is closed during renovation, so please use the Park Avenue side entrance or the elevator entrance.

REGISTER TO VOTE, HOBOKEN! 🗳️ The City Clerk’s Office is staying open late to help you get registered!

Want to vote in the Nov. 3 general election? If you’re not yet registered, the deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 13.

💻 Register online: https://voter.svrs.nj.gov/register
🏛️ Prefer to register in person? The City Clerk’s Office at 94 Washington St. will remain open until 9 PM on:
• Thursday, Oct. 8
• Friday, Oct. 9
• Tuesday, Oct. 13

📍 Enter through the Newark Street entrance between Washington Street and Bloomfield Street to submit your voter registration application.

Once registered, you can vote by mail, vote early in person from Oct. 24 through Nov. 1, or vote at your assigned polling place on Election Day, Nov. 3, from 6 AM to 8 PM.

Genre Defying Science Fiction: Written in Starlight and Prophet

The Hoboken Public Library is truly saddened by the passing of Clark Matthews, who served as Secretary to our Board of Trustees for more than a decade.

His devotion to his work and his care for the people around him shaped this institution in ways both seen and unseen. We are grateful for his years of service and the gift of knowing him. Rest well.
