October 18-24 is National Friends of Libraries Week which gives us the opportunity to thank our own Friends of the Gale Free Library for their ongoing support of the Library!

Thanks to their hard work and fundraising efforts, the Library is able to provide invaluable services, resources, and programs for the community, including museum passes, online databases (such as Ancestry.com), art exhibits and workshops, adult programming, and the Children’s Summer Reading Program. In addition, they have helped fund two large projects that we have aspired to for quite some time: the restoration of the Library’s historic windows, as well as the renovation of our Children’s Room. We cannot thank you enough for your dedication and commitment to helping the Library flourish and fulfilling the needs of our patrons now, and for generations to come!

If you are interested in learning more about the Friends of Gale Free Library, or becoming a member, please reach out to us at the Library at (508)210-5569.

Are you looking for a fun and free outing with a spooky-season vibe? Join us and Boston’s Murder Mystery Company on Thursday, October 22 for a glamorous evening of mystery and intrigue as our Reading Room is transformed into the scene of a Masquerade Ball Murder Mystery! Attend the “Billionaires’ Club Annual Masquerade Ball” and, with the help of your fellow party goers, get the soiree back on track by trading clues, gathering information, and solving the crime before the masked menace gets away.

The “crime” will take place from 6-8pm, however guests are expected to arrive by 5:30pm to mingle, review the rules, set the scene, and receive suspect roles. Costumes are encouraged! This program is intended for patrons 18 years and up.

There are just a few spaces left for this program. For more information or to register, please call the Reference Desk at 508-210-5569 or email us at [email protected].

With a chilly weekend on tap, this guy has the right idea! If you want to set yourself up for some great reading, maybe with a side of Bingo fun, be sure to stop by the Library for some spooky (or not-too-spooky) tales to enjoy. Then, be sure to pop into the Children’s Room for a full view of the LEGO Clubs’ most recent collaborative creation! We’re here until 5:30pm today and Saturday from 9am-4pm.

As we near the end of October, the time has come to wrap our Seed Library up for the year. It has been a wonderful experience for us, working with our community, and learning about and growing our own vegetables, flowers, and herbs (and flowers for our pollinators). We are already looking forward to next year, with more seeds and new programs to share!

We want to sincerely thank the Friends of the Gale Free Library, the Holden Community Garden, the Holden Garden Club, High Mowing Seeds, Blue Stem Natives, our fellow Seed Libraries, and our generous patrons for their donations and support. Without you, this project wouldn’t have been possible!

We also want to thank one of our talented staff members who created the stamps that appear on our seed envelopes and Seed Library tote bags. Our tote bags are still on sale at the Reference Desk.

Please come visit our Seed Library one last time before the end of the month–you are welcome to take 3 more packs to plant this season, or to get a head start for next year!

If you want to try an instrument that’s fun and easy to play, we have a few more spaces in our “Learn the Ukulele” program with Julie Stepanek on Thursday, October 15 from 6:30-7:30pm! Julie will show us the “fun”-damentals of the instrument–no experience necessary! And, no need to have your own instrument–ukuleles will be provided for the class.

This program is designed for adults ages 16 and up. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information, or to register, please contact the Reference Desk at 508-210-5569 or email us at [email protected]. This is a great program for those who may be interested in our Ukulele Group, but it’s been a while since you’ve played (if ever!), or just those who want to try something new!
