The Golden-crowned Kinglet is a seasonal migrant in our neighborhood, along the coast of Lake Michigan. The males are easily identifiable by a bright yellow-orange patch on the crown of their heads, and the females usually sport a smaller flash of yellow. They make very distinctive high-pitched peeps and love to snack on seeds and berries. 👑

By leaving your fallen leaves and waiting to clean out your garden beds until spring, you're supporting key habitat and food sources for many pollinators (and other wildlife) that overwinter in stems and leaf litter. Check out these fall landscaping tips:
🍂 Leave fallen leaves (or mow over them) & let them break down over the winter
🍁 If you have an area that needs non-negotiable tidying, try to neatly gather the plant material and place it in a nearby pile to minimize disruption to local wildlife
🍂 Fully remove diseased plant material and remove or treat invasive species
🍁Wait until it's been 50 degrees for a few days in the spring before cleaning up your landscaping

The Republic Service station (4368 60th St, Holland, MI 49423) will be holding a free open house on October 3 from 11-4 with activities for the whole family! There will be food, entertainment, and fun ways to learn about recycling, truck hauling, and safely loading bins for curbside pickup. Community members can see firsthand how recycling keeps tons (literal tons!) of material out of landfills and learn about how upcoming facility improvements will help reclaim even more materials for reuse!

As this takes place at the service station, please wear closed-toed shoes.

It's the finale of Our Green Holland week! 🌱 From 9-2, the City of Holland is hosting a recycling drop-off at Thermotron. This event is free for City residents, and it’s the perfect chance to recycle common but hard-to-dispose-of items! There are guidelines, restrictions, and limits for the drop-off; please visit recycling.cityofholland.com to learn more!

Across the road, ODC Network is hosting the Macatawa Water Festival (rescheduled from July 18). Over 25 community partners will be leading hands-on, educational, water-focused activities. Free and fun for the whole family, with activities, kayaking, games, crafts, and rides in the Gabagouache. Learn more at outdoordiscovery.org/macatawa-water-festival/
