Great Lakes National Cemetery Honoring Veterans and their eligible family members with final resting places in National Shrines. Mr.

Great Lakes National Cemetery is the second national cemetery built in Michigan and the 122nd in the national cemetery system. Great Lakes National Cemetery is located approximately 50 miles northwest of downtown Detroit, in Holly Township, Oakland County. The cemetery borders Fagan Lake, and is located on a portion of a land grant from the Federal Government to Terrance Fagan in 1836. Historically, the property served as farmland until it was acquired by the National Cemetery Administration in 2002. In the 20th century, the property was purchased by Bryson Dexter Horton, a Spanish-American War veteran-turned-industrialist who invented the "Square D" switch. Horton's invention dramatically improved electrical safety, by encasing the switch in steel and protecting users from the live electrical current. Horton constructed a small house on the property in 1927, and reportedly entertained such preeminent locals as Henry and Edsel Ford, who both hunted and fished there. Great Lakes National Cemetery was established in 2005, and the first burial took place on October 17 of that year.

Last Saturday the Great Lakes National Cemetery was invaded by a large group of 280 individuals armed with brushes and buckets. Their demands were simple, to help keep our shrine a place of beauty and help get her ready for the holiday season. The weather was beautiful and we hope that everyone had a good time. The staff here want to give a huge thank you to everyone who helped out, whether it was cleaning headstones, helping to get everyone registered, or cooking for the masses.

Oct 21st, 2026 marks the 229th anniversary of the launching of the worlds 2nd oldest commissioned warship (the HMS Victory launched 34 years earlier). Today back in 1797 the USS Constitution was launched. The USS Constitution, (which is actually a frigate) gained her famous nickname "Old Ironsides" during the war of 1812 when British cannonballs appeared to bounce off her oak hull.

She was built to carry 44 guns, 8 small boats, and a full crew compliment of 450. Sadly, all of her original guns were removed in 1897 when the ship was used as barracks. The guns on her now were cast from original British guns and were installed during the 1920's and 1930's. She does carry two of the cannon were modified to fire 40mm "Salute" rounds each day.

She still manages to get underway up to eight times a year for different events assisted by tugboats. The last time she was under sail was for her 200th birthday back in July, 1997.

If you ever get the chance to visit her down in Boston at the Charlestown Navy yard you really should. Walk her decks and tour one of the few places still afloat where history truly happened.

The USS Constitution today is manned by a slightly smaller crew of at least 88 Sailors and officers

Good morning everyone! If you haven't visited the Great Lakes National Cemetery in awhile, this week would be a great time. The maples are in full-on color mode with the oaks slowly coming into their own.

If you come out to visit a gravesite, please remember to visit their Veterans Legacy Memorial page and add to their story. It's a great way to keep their memories alive.

Good morning all you friends and family of our Great Lakes National Cemetery.

At some point in the next week or so, If you are visiting us here at the Great Lakes National Cemetery, you might think we had been invaded by thousands of Canada Geese, but we assure you that (the majority of at least đŸ˜‰ ) the plugs sitting in our grass are not parting gifts which have been left to us by the Geese as they get ready to fly South, they are just plugs of our turf and will dissolve back into the Earth soon enough.

Our sections will be both aerated and over-seeded. Our grass is aerated each year to help create stronger growth for next year. We hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend.

On Tuesday morning, employees and community partners from the War Memorial of Grosse Pointe visited the Great Lakes National Cemetery for a few hours. They were graced with some amazing weather while they volunteered to help maintain the beauty of our national shrine and it was great talking with them. The War Memorial is truly a beautiful place if you've never visited them and they put on a lot of events for Veterans and the public. A huge thank you for your work!
