Donated Structure Provides Multiple Evolutions of Training
Acquired structures provide firefighters opportunities to exercise skills in an environment of realism that cannot usually be replicated outside of an actual house fire. While initial training and certification occur in engineered training centers, most of the hands-on skills we develop occur during actual emergency calls for service.
When a structure is donated to the fire department for training, we have the opportunity to move our firefighters through a structure, to focus on hazards associated with the types of construction we will encounter, victim removal constraints we will navigate, and fire control and extinguishment techniques to apply.
In the past couple months Hollywood Volunteers have prepared a donated structure in order to perform controlled live-fire training evolutions this coming November. During the months of September and October, organized drills, within the house have focused on initial fire ground operations, including scene size-ups, hose line and ladder placement, searches and victim removal, and Rapid Intervention (RIT) response to a downed firefighter. Many of our mutual aid partners have been able to partake in these drill nights, adding the benefit of getting in reps with the companies we work alongside throughout the county.
