There is no one way to become disabled.

People are born with disabilities. We acquire disabilities through genetics, illness, accidents, natural disasters, military service and countless other paths.

Our experiences are not all the same. They don’t have to be.

But we cannot keep letting the world separate us.

There is POWER in learning from each other, understanding our rights, building our advocacy skills and showing up together.

People are more powerful advocates when they understand their rights and know how to use them.

If you want to know your rights, strengthen your advocacy and be part of a community check us out at Holyoke Commission on Disability

🚨 It's Emergency Preparedness Month 🚨

September is Emergency Preparedness Month, and the City of Holyoke is encouraging residents to take a few simple steps to help prepare themselves, their families, and their neighbors for emergencies.

Being prepared doesn’t mean expecting the worst, it means being ready just in case. A little planning now can make a big difference when unexpected situations happen.

Here are a few easy ways to get started:

📱 Stay informed—Know where to find reliable information from the City of Holyoke and local public safety agencies. Such as official city websites and social media pages and our page.

🔔 Sign up for emergency alerts—make sure you can receive important notifications and instructions.

👨‍👩‍👧 Create a household plan—Talk with your family about how you’ll communicate and where you’ll go if you need to leave home.

🎒 Build an emergency kit—Keep essentials like water, food, medications, flashlights, batteries, and other necessities on hand.

🐶 Plan for individual needs—Remember children, older adults, people with disabilities, pets, and anyone who may need additional assistance.

🤝 Check on your neighbors—strong communities look out for one another, especially during challenging times.

Preparedness doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Small steps taken over time can help you and your loved ones feel more prepared and confident when emergencies happen.

Let’s use Emergency Preparedness Month as a reminder to learn, plan, stay informed, and look out for one another.

🗣🗣🗣 Help shape positive change in our community! The 2026 Commission on Disabilities Survey is now open, and we’d love to hear from you.
Your experiences matter. By sharing the challenges and barriers you face, you can help us better understand what needs to improve and guide meaningful change.
Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and encourage others to participate too. Together, we can help build a more accessible, inclusive community.
