FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CITY OF HOLYOKE ANNOUNCES REDUCTION IN SPEED LIMITS ON CITY SIDE STREETS
HOLYOKE, COLORADO – The City of Holyoke and the Holyoke Police Department would like to inform residents and motorists of an upcoming change to speed limits on city side streets.
Effective Monday, September 14, 2026, the speed limit on city side streets will be reduced from 30 mph to 20 mph.
The new 20 mph speed limit will apply to city side streets throughout Holyoke, with the exception of E. Johnson Street, Interocean Avenue, and Denver Street. The posted speed limits on those roadways will remain in effect.
45-Day Warning and Education Period
To provide motorists with an opportunity to become familiar with the new speed limit, the Holyoke Police Department will conduct a 45-day warning and education period beginning September 14.
During this period, officers will issue warnings rather than citations for violations of the newly reduced 20 mph speed limit. Motorists are encouraged to use this time to become familiar with the new speed limits and adjust their driving habits accordingly.
Beginning November 1, 2026, officers will begin issuing citations for violations of the new 20 mph speed limit.
Reducing speeds on city side streets is intended to promote safer travel throughout Holyoke, particularly in residential areas where motorists share the roadway with pedestrians, bicyclists, children, and other members of the community. Lower vehicle speeds provide drivers with additional time to recognize and react to potential hazards and can help reduce the severity of crashes when they occur.
The City of Holyoke and the Holyoke Police Department appreciate the community’s cooperation during this transition. The goal of the warning period is to educate motorists and provide ample opportunity for everyone to become accustomed to the change before enforcement begins.
Motorists are encouraged to slow down, stay alert, and watch for newly posted 20 mph speed limit signs throughout the community.
