October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Last night Chief Pitman, along with 20-30 local leaders competed for the title of “Best Chef” at the Lookout at Hope Lake Lodge at Greek Peak during the YWCA’s 7th annual Chefs Take a Stand Against Domestic Violence fundraising event. The Chief didn’t win the title with his chicken chili, but he was honored to compete during this awesome event to raise funds and awareness for the YWCA Cortland’s Aid to Victims of Violence (AVV). The fundraising event, held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, highlights the incredible work of AVV staff and the crucial need for their services to victims of domestic violence. Congrats to the “Best Chefs” winners and great job to the AVV staff for organizing this event.

Calling all creative teenagers!! The New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee is having a Poster Challenge. They are inviting NYS High School Juniors and Seniors to create a poster raising awareness about preventing “unsafe driving habits” as a driver or passenger or recognizing an “unsafe driver” on the road. The poster will be distributed throughout New York State and should encourage people to make safe choices before getting in the car and while on the road.

Another successful county drug take back event yesterday! Thanks to everyone that stopped by and dropped off their unused and expired medications. You helped prevent unused drugs find their way into the wrong hands and illegally sold. You also helped save the environment instead of flushing the drugs down toilet and contaminating the water supply. Special thanks to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office for organizing the event and to the members of the Homer, Cincinnatus, Marathon, and Homer Fire Departments who helped us out yesterday at the different locations.
