The Homeworth Fire Department is proud to announce the receipt of a $157,000 federal grant dedicated to upgrading its life-support equipment. This critical funding was used to purchase 16 state-of-the-art Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) air packs and all-new masks, ensuring the highest level of safety for our firefighters while protecting community tax dollars.
SCBA units are the single most vital piece of equipment for firefighters, providing a source of clean, breathable air in toxic, zero-visibility, and low-oxygen environments. In addition to providing immediate life support, SCBAs serve as a crucial line of defense against long-term health risks, blocking the inhalation of deadly gases and modern synthetic carcinogens known to cause cancer.
This grant allows us to completely replace our obsolete, expiring air packs with a standardized, cutting-edge fleet. With the addition of all-new masks for every firefighter. With this upgrade, the department achieves immediate, full alignment with strict National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) compliance standards.
Beyond firefighter safety, the $157,000 award provides immense financial relief to the local community. By covering this massive capital expense through grant funding, the department has successfully eliminated the financial burden on upcoming levy money. These protected levy funds can now be redirected to support other critical operational needs and equipment maintenance.
This grant is a major milestone for our department and the residents we protect, it ensures our firefighters have the highest standard of respiratory protection available, without placing an extra financial burden on our community's taxpayers. Along with interoperability with all of our surrounding departments.
