Today, a blessing was held to mark the opening of the new playground at Nehu Park in ʻĀina Haina! 🛝 This vibrant new playground is a wonderful reminder of what we can accomplish when residents and City government work together. This is especially meaningful because this project started several years ago when two dedicated moms came to my office with concerns about the deteriorating and unsafe playground equipment (swipe to the last slide to see what it used to look like).

My team and I took those concerns seriously, and worked closely with DPR and the moms to reimagine the park space. From bringing back the beloved double-swing set to incorporating seating areas for families and accessible pathways, many of the features we are celebrating today was designed by the community, for the community.

I want to extend a heartfelt mahalo to everyone who helped make this project possible. To Director Thielen and her team for listening to the community, to for bringing this vision to life, and the ʻĀina Haina moms for your persistence, patience, and advocacy on behalf of all the parents in the neighborhood. When we invest in our parks, we’re investing in our keiki, families, and the overall quality of life for the neighborhood.

I’m excited to see all the new memories that will be made here at Nehu Park! 🎉

Mahalo to the Department of Facility Maintenance (DFM) for bringing city, state, and community leaders together for a productive workshop on the Kūhiō Beach Showers Improvement Project!

Kūhiō Beach is one of Waikīkī’s most visited public spaces, and it’s important that the amenities serving our residents and visitors are designed to last. During the workshop, we reviewed design alternatives, shared feedback, and discussed what matters most: showers that are practical, durable, sustainable, and easy to maintain.

We also reflected on lessons learned from Kaimana Beach, particularly the importance of balancing water conservation with adequate water pressure, proper drainage, and reliable service. Above all, these improvements need to be cost-effective and completed in a timely manner. Our community deserves public facilities that work, and we have a kuleana to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

More community meetings are anticipated as the project moves forward, so stay tuned for additional opportunities to learn more and share your input. Looking forward to continuing the conversation and working together to deliver meaningful improvements to Kūhiō Beach!

🗳️ Do you know what's on your ballot?

On November 3, 2026, Oʻahu voters will have the opportunity to vote on 20 proposed amendments to the Honolulu City Charter.

The City Charter serves as the foundation for how city government operates, makes decisions and delivers services to our communities.

With 20 proposed amendments on the ballot, there's a lot of information to review.

To help residents better understand what's being proposed, we've put together an informational video that breaks down each amendment, including:

✅ What each amendment would do
✅ Why it's on the ballot
✅ Why some people support it
✅ What concerns have been raised

Before casting your ballot, take some time to learn about each proposed amendment and what it could mean for Oʻahu.

A big step forward for public safety in Kaimukī! 🚑 Today, we celebrated the opening of Honolulu Emergency Medical Services’ (EMS) new Kaimukī station with a special blessing. Located at 3650 Waialae Avenue, this new station brings 24/7 emergency medical coverage to Kaimukī, Pālolo Valley, and Kāhala, while providing additional support to neighboring communities when needed.

I know how important it is for our residents and families to have reliable access to emergency medical care. When an emergency happens, every second counts, and having an ambulance stationed right here in Kaimukī can make a meaningful difference.

The impact is already being felt! Since beginning operations on Oct. 4, the new ambulance has already responded to more than 200 emergency calls and transported over 100 patients to emergency rooms. These numbers speak to the need for this additional resource and the important role it plays in serving our community.

Mahalo to Mayor Rick Blangiardi, EMS Director Jim Ireland, and the dedicated EMS personnel for making this possible and for their continued commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Happy Filipino American History Month (FAHM)! 🇵🇭

Yesterday, the Honolulu City Council proudly wore our barongs and Filipiniana attire to celebrate the rich history, vibrant culture, and lasting contributions of Filipino Americans in Hawaiʻi and across the nation. From agriculture and fishing to education, healthcare, business, public service, the arts, and the U.S. military, Filipino Americans have played an important role in shaping our communities and continue to leave a lasting impact today.

This year’s celebration is especially meaningful as we commemorate 120 years since the arrival of the first Sakadas in Hawaiʻi and 80 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the United States. One of the things I appreciate most about our City Council is the diversity of the people who serve our communities. I’m especially grateful for our Filipino colleagues, whose hard work, dedication, and perspectives contribute so much to the work we do every day. As we celebrate FAHM, we honor not only the generations who came before us, but also those who continue to carry their legacy forward.
