“Representing an investment of approximately $1 billion, Matson’s Makua and the two other new Jones Act-compliant vessels are being built to match the size and speed of the company’s two existing Aloha Class ships, Daniel K. Inouye, and Kaimana Hila, which were also built at the Philadelphia shipyard and set a new standard for cargo transportation in Hawaii when they entered service in 2018 and 2019, respectively, as the largest containerships ever constructed in the U.S.

“Like their sisterships, Makua and the other two new vessels will be equipped with dual fuel engines designed to operate on either conventional marine fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as other “green ship technology” features, such as a fuel-efficient hull design, environmentally safe double hull fuel tanks, and freshwater ballast systems. While the earlier ships required some modification to operate with LNG, the new ships will be delivered LNG-ready.”

In the wake of wildfires and storms, concerns about grid resilience rise.

“The challenges on Molokaʻi reflect the broader challenge HECO faces trying to restore its aging, multi-island grids. Even before the 2023 Maui wildfires that killed 102 people and destroyed much of Lahaina, HECO was aware of the grid’s vulnerability to hurricanes and tropical storms.

“To address that, the company put forward a $190 million plan to strengthen infrastructure — funded in part by federal taxpayers — in 2021. The Maui fires led HECO to shift focus from hurricanes to wildfires. As part of that work, on Molokaʻi, the company plans to replace wiring installed over half a century ago.”

HECO plans to replace eight miles of power lines and upgrade 27 poles in eastern Molokaʻi. (Kevin Fujii/ civilbeat /2026)

In “Covering the Cost” on Sept. 30, Hawaii News Now's Annalisa Burgos talked with Erik Montague, vice president of development at JERA Americas about what is entailed in bringing LNG as an energy source to Hawaii.

"LNG is an ultra-cold, compressed form of natural gas used to transport and store energy over long distances. JERA hopes to build a $2 billion LNG power plant on Oahu where it can process the gas and generate power.

"Energy expert Henry Curtis says JERA is one of the largest LNG buyers in the world, “which gives it considerable leverage when it comes to negotiating supply prices — an important detail for a state like Hawaiʻi that must import virtually all of its energy.”

“We think that by transitioning from the oil that is used today for about 70% of the power that’s made in Oahu to gas. Gas, fortunately, is a lower-cost form of energy and so that, we think, will help drive affordability here,” Erik Montague, JERA Americas vice president of development, told HNN in July. “It’s all part of the mix of needing to upgrade power plants and invest capital in new facilities.”
