Salmon = happy heart!

Salmon is full of heart-healthy nutrients! But how it’s prepared is key and our local Tribes have understood this for generations 🙌

Grilled, baked, steamed, or cooked over an open pit helps the fish retain its heart-healthy properties 🔥

The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two 3-ounce servings of fatty fish per week, which includes salmon, to gain heart-protective benefits. It’s important to avoid frying salmon as this can negate some of its cardiovascular benefits 🩸

Eating salmon regularly can:
• Reduce inflammation in blood vessels, which helps prevent plaque buildup and atherosclerosis
• Lower the risk of blood clots and thrombosis, improving blood flow and reducing the likelihood of heart attacks and strokes
• Support healthy heart rhythm, which can prevent arrhythmias
• Moderately lower blood pressure, contributing to overall cardiovascular protection

So get your FISH ON! 🐟 And help protect your heart on World Heart Day

Did you know that acorns are heart-protective nutrients? 💕

Acorns are rich in unsaturated fats and contain high levels of HDL (good cholesterol) while helping lower LDL (bad cholesterol). This balance helps support healthy blood lipid profiles and helps maintain a healthy circulatory system! 🩸

Acorns also contain antioxidants which can help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation – both of which are linked to cardiovascular disease.

With the coming of fall, it’s important for us all to remember that acorns didn’t just feed our people; they helped us sustain a healthy lifestyle that aided in our longevity as Hupa people. 💪🏾

This World Heart Day, we want to remind our community that Native Americans suffer the highest rates of cardiovascular disease (12% compared to 1-8% for other races). Heart disease is the leading killer in Native Americans. Acorns can help reduce these statistics! 🙌
