Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site Welcome to the official page of Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, located in NY's Rensselaer County.

Visit to learn more about this significant Revolutionary War battle and explore the battlefield. Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site is the location of a Revolutionary War battle between crown forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum and American forces under General John Stark and Colonel Seth Warner. A detachment from British General John Burgoyne's army was sent to scure much needed supplies including mounts, oxen, carts and livestock in Bennington. American miltia successfully repelled this force as well as reinforcements sent to its aid. The British surrendered on October 17, 1777, after two unsuccessful battles in Saratoga. The Saratoga Campaign has since been identified as the turning point of the Revolutionary War. Facilities at the site include game fields, 276 acres, interpretive panels, information room, and restrooms. We are pleased to present a recording of Saturday's lecture, "Gliched: Fact or Fiction at the Battle of Bennington" by Phil Holland.

There are some minor technical issues with this recording that we hope the viewer will forgive. This was a fascinating subject explored by a thoroughly knowledgeable and insightful speaker. Enjoy!

It is a fact that a fictive memoir of the Battle of Bennington, the so-called “Glich account,” has had a long and vigorous afterlife as history, from J.D. Butler (1848) to Bruce Atkinson (2026) and AI. Other, lesser fictions have also won a place in retellings of the Battle. How should historians handle them? Are there even “objective facts” about the Battle to be had? What does the general public want from history when they learn about the Battle?

Join us at the Caretaker's House on Saturday, August 29th at 2pm for an in-person guest lecture "Gliched: Fact or Fiction at the Battle of Bennington" by local author & historian Phil Holland.

Thank you for joining us this past weekend in celebrating the 249th anniversary of the Battle of Bennington! We appreciate the support from our local community, and from those who traveled across the country to attend. The weekend was filled with battlefield tours, a wreath laying ceremony, and demonstrations by Bennington 250 and the 2nd Continental Artillery 💥

Thank you to those who delivered readings during our Commemoration Ceremony, and special thanks to Senator Jake Ashby for helping us honor this important moment in Revolutionary history. Further thanks to Friends of the Bennington Battlefield, and Friends of the Bennington Battle Monument for their support.

The Battle of Bennington took place on August 16th, 1777, between a detachment from British General John Burgoyne's invading army and New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont state militia, commanded by General John Stark of New Hampshire and Colonel Seth Warner of Vermont. The battle was fought in two engagements and resulted in a decisive victory for the Americans.

As a result, General Burgoyne's army suffered irreplaceable losses and failed to gather the supplies needed for a timely push on to Albany. The battle is widely regarded as the "first link" in a chain of successes leading to General Burgoyne's surrender to the Americans on October 17, 1777, after the Battles of Saratoga.

Join us next year for our 250th celebration of the battle!

The Bennington Battle has inspired many artists, including Grandma Moses. This painting was commissioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution, but rejected for not being historically accurate.

While Moses was deeply interested in the past, especially local history, her historical images tend to rely more on hearsay, memory, and personal association than historical fact. Moses borrowed the figures carrying two wounded soldiers in the lower right of her composition from LeRoy Williams’ painting "Col. Baum and Col. Pfister Mortally Wounded," from the Bennington Museum collection, indicating she did research the battle. However, in an interview with Edward R. Murrow the artist explained why she included the Battle Monument in the painting (upper right), despite the fact that it wasn’t built for more than a century after the battle: "Well, I put the monument in because it looked good, I guess."
