The Trice Castle Trice Castle History

The Trice Castle was built in 1905 for Miss Anna Mallory Trice after her father died. The architect was F.J. Lucian H. Mr. and Mrs.

Schlotter of Evansville, Indiana according to The Hopkinsville Kentuckian newspaper on April 1, 1905. The Davis Monument and Construction Company, owned by Mr. Davis, built the house as mentioned in the Hopkinsville Kentuckian newspaper on February 2, 1915. Davis also built several other stone structures such as the Cumberland Telephone Company, his residence on East 7th Street, the wings at Western State Hospital, and other private and public buildings. Miss Annie Trice got the deed to her castle on January 20, 1906 and lived in her castle until 1939 at the age of 89. The skeleton keys were turned over to George and Patty Duffer on October 17, 1939. They rented the house to Fletcher Fink from 1940-1942(?). There are no records of who lived in the house in the years 1943-1945. The city did not issue city directories during this time period probably due to WWII. Either the Finks rented the house during this time period or Mr. Duffer moved into the house. His wife died in 1942 and he moved to the house sometime after 1942. Either way, the Duffer family owned the house for 19 years until they sold the house to Mary Evelyn Hammond in 1958. She and her family lived in the house until it was sold in 1964 to Odell and Aline Johnson. Johnson sold the house to Harold and Aurelia DeBolt on September 12, 1973. The Debolt family turned over the keys to the Steele family on October 26, 1981. The OKeefe’s bought the house in 1985 and sold the house in 1998 to the Worthy family. They occupied the house until 2000 when Judy Hall bought The Trice Castle. Judge Hall sold The Trice Castle to the Adkins family in 2004. On June 14, 2018, John and Jeri Lynn Richardson purchased the spectacular house and are currently restoring the inside and outside of the house. This house has such great history and the Richardsons have been tracking down past owners and descendents of owners to get pictures and hear stories related to the house. Out of 10 owners, the Richardsons have been in touch with 8 of the families, including Annie’s descendants.

What a fun St. Louis trip! And look at this fabulous Immortelle piece that we got from friends while there. Immortelles are French and were draped on caskets or hung on mausoleums. This one has a picture of the child that it was made for. Immortelle means “everlasting”. Also, we found the Morrison children graves at Calvary Cemetery. It took a while but we found them. We always like to walk around cemeteries and look for unusual tombstones.

Continuing the Jesse James bank robbery in Russellville, Ky….This is a very interesting letter written by John Buckner Trice to his mother. It is dated May 3rd, 1875 and mentions that detectives in Louisville have warned the Hopkinsville banks that Jesse is coming to Hopkinsville! He talks about being on high alert and watching every stranger who walks through the banks doors. How fascinating!!!

Here’s a fun recent auction happening with local ties.

The historic Southern Bank in Russellville KY is well-known for the 1868 robbery involving Jesse James.

Well, the revolver used by J.James during the robbery sold at auction this summer….for over $100k!! 💰 💰

Sold in June by Morphy Auctions, it also came with a letter signed by James’ son and daughter-in-law supporting the provenance.

The bank has long been a private residence and is currently for sale through Kayla Pierson & The KP Team of Keller Williams Realty

Our latest fun find…a Kearney & Wiggers “modern gothic” mechanical desk, patent 1877.

Often referred to as a ‘Wiggers desk’ the firm was located in Cincinnati.

We have since learned we are the first owners outside of the original family.

First acquired in Madison WI, the desk made its way from WI onto Greenwich CT and Denver CO before landing on St Simons Island GA; all with the family.

It comes to us through Ahlers & Ogletree Auction Gallery in Atlanta and we are excited to have it
