This is completed each year while also responding to thousands of emergency calls, performing daily station duties, completing patient care reports, and accomplishing many hours of EMS training.

Szarek Receives Paramedic Certification

The City of Hornell would like to recognize Firefighter Joshua Szarek for earning his paramedic certification and passing the New York State and National Paramedic Board exams. Szarek is now a fully certified paramedic with the Hornell Fire Department (HFD).

Fire Chief Frank Brzozowski commended Szarek at the October Board of Public Safety meeting, stating, “Josh did a great job in paramedic school at Monroe Community College (MCC). The program is very rigorous, and Josh maintained high marks with positive feedback from the instructor throughout his training. The program has extensive classroom hours, as well as hands-on training with the emergency departments in hospitals, including Strong Memorial Hospital. It’s extensive training and testing, and Josh did a great job every step of the way.”

Szarek was appointed as a firefighter by the Board of Public Safety in August 2022 and also has experience with the North Hornell Fire Department as a firefighter. He also held credentials as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) prior to joining the department.

Mayor John Buckley also praised Szarek’s achievement, stating, “Josh has done a great job for our department and we are excited to see him advance his education and career as a paramedic. Being a paramedic is a significant achievement, requiring dedication and a great deal of training. I’m looking forward to Josh continuing his service to the department and the people of the Hornell community.”

Congratulations to Firefighter Szarek on earning his paramedic certification and taking this next step in his career with the Hornell Fire Department. We look forward to his continued service to the Hornell community.

This is very exciting news for our city!

City of Hornell Receives Million-Dollar Infrastructure Grant

The City of Hornell has been awarded $1 million through New York State’s County Infrastructure Grant Program. The award is to construct the infrastructure needed for a ten-unit single-family home development on West Street.

Mayor John Buckley thanked those involved in securing the funding. “We really appreciate the State of New York for this award, the City of Hornell Industrial Development Agency for putting together the application, and the Steuben County Legislature for recommending this project to the State of New York. We also appreciate the Steuben County IDA and the Steuben County for their recommendations and support. There is a strong need for new single family housing in the City of Hornell, and this project will help address that need by adding ten brand new homes to our community."

City of Hornell IDA Executive Director Mike Nisbet also thanked those involved in supporting the project. “We appreciate this funding and all of the support that went into this application. A project like this means a lot for the City and will help drive economic growth. Having more new, modern homes is attractive to people looking to live and work in the area, and that is also attractive to businesses looking to develop and invest in the City.”

The grant will fund the installation of municipal water and sewer lines, stormwater and lighting infrastructure, as well as a new access roadway. “This grant will fund the parts of the development that may not look as exciting as the visible construction of new houses, but are incredibly essential. The water and sewer lines, lighting, stormwater infrastructure, and the road to get there are important first steps in making this development possible,” noted Mayor Buckley.

The $1 million award is part of more than $3.75 million awarded to five projects throughout the Southern Tier through the latest round of the County Infrastructure Grant Program. The program provides funding for infrastructure improvements needed to support housing and other development.
