📣 Special Announcement 📣

The Houma Fire Department would like to congratulate Deputy Chief Brent Chiasson on his retirement today, October 9, 2026, after 25 years of dedicated service to our community.

Before joining Houma Fire, Brent began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with the St. John Volunteer Fire Department in Lafourche Parish. He was hired by the Houma Fire Department in 2001, just over a month after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, answering the call to serve during a defining time for the fire service profession.

Throughout his career, Chief Chiasson worked his way through every promotional rank within the department. He was promoted to Driver Operator in 2003, Fire Captain in 2016, and after several years leading a station crew, was promoted to District Fire Chief in 2021. As District Chief, his responsibilities expanded from supervising a crew of three firefighters to overseeing an entire shift of up to 16 personnel.

In November 2025, Brent achieved the rank of Deputy Fire Chief, assuming responsibility for all suppression operations, fire stations, and nearly 50 fire line personnel. Throughout each assignment, he demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to serving both the department and the citizens of Terrebonne Parish.

As he begins this next chapter, Chief Chiasson looks forward to spending more time with family and friends, including enjoying time on family property in Tennessee.

On behalf of the men and women of the Houma Fire Department, thank you, Chief Chiasson, for your dedication, leadership, and 25 years of service.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Chief Brent Chiasson on a well-earned retirement!

🚒 Congratulations, Chief! Enjoy your retirement and God's blessings in the years ahead.

🚨 Residential Fire | September 28, 2026 🚨

At approximately 6:14 a.m. this morning, the City of Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire in the backyard of a residence on Clairmont Ln.

A passerby noticed the fire and immediately called 911 after observing multiple vehicles in the driveway. The caller was able to alert the occupants, allowing them to safely evacuate the home before firefighters arrived.

Prior to our arrival, the fire had extended up the side of the residence, entered the attic space, and begun burning through the roof. The first arriving fire company encountered heavy fire conditions involving the garage roof. Based on initial conditions, the responding chief requested a Second Alarm, bringing additional Houma Fire Department resources and command staff to the scene.

As crews battled the fire, it spread from the attached garage into the main living area of the home. A Third Alarm was subsequently requested, bringing assistance from the Bayou Cane Fire Protection District, including additional apparatus, an ambulance, and a battalion chief. Houma Fire Department aerial apparatus were repositioned and placed into operation to assist firefighters in bringing the fire under control.

Thanks to the quick actions of the passerby and the rapid response of emergency personnel, all occupants safely escaped without injury. Firefighters also successfully rescued a family cat during search operations.

Unfortunately, a neighboring residence sustained minor damage during suppression efforts. No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported.

We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Bayou Cane Regional Training Academy and BC Training Officer Adam Schmitt for their assistance and support during this incident.

The area was closed to traffic but is now open. A Houma Fire investigator in onscene conducting an investigation to the possible cause. It is undetermined at this time.

We want to thank everyone for the teamwork by all agencies involved.

📣 **EMERGENCY INCIDENT** 📣

At approximately 5:24 a.m. on September 5, 2026, the City of Houma Fire Department was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 2200 block of Effie Street on the east side of Houma.

Fire crews arrived within three minutes and found a mobile home with heavy fire involvement. Due to rapidly deteriorating conditions, firefighters immediately initiated an aggressive search and fire attack.

At approximately 5:31 a.m., firefighters located a victim inside the residence and quickly removed her from the home. Crews immediately began life-saving efforts; however, she was later pronounced deceased. Firefighters completed a secondary search of the residence, and no additional occupants were located. The fire was declared under control at 5:38 a.m., less than ten minutes after crews arrived on scene.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office responded and is leading the investigation, which remains ongoing. Houma Fire Department investigators and the Houma Police Department are assisting.

The victim has been identified by the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office as Belinda Leboeuf, 32.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of working smoke alarms. It is unknown at this time whether a functioning smoke alarm was present in the home. Residents who need smoke alarms are encouraged to contact their local fire department. Through a partnership with the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office, smoke alarms are available and can be installed free of charge.

Please keep the victim's family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time.

🚨 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENT RESPONSE 🚨

This morning, Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Houma Fire Department Hazardous Materials Division was notified of a potentially hazardous situation developing near Highway 90 in western Terrebonne Parish.

West Terrebonne Fire District was dispatched to a semi-truck fire involving a tanker transporting approximately 4,200 gallons of jet fuel. The driver was able to safely move the vehicle off the main roadway and onto a ramp connecting LA Highway 90 and LA Highway 662, reducing the risk to motorists and surrounding areas.

Bayou L'Ourse Fire Department (Assumption Parish) and West Terrebonne Fire District responded to the scene, while Schriever Fire Department and the Houma Fire Department's 3,000-gallon tanker were placed on standby and prepared to respond if needed.

The first arriving units were able to quickly locate and extinguish the fire before it involved the tanker load. Louisiana State Police Hazardous Materials and Traffic Divisions were notified, and the ramp was closed while crews worked to secure the load, complete overhaul operations, and ensure the area was safe.

✅ No injuries were reported.

✅ No jet fuel was released.

✅ The fire was extinguished before involving the truck cargo.

Following mitigation efforts and cleanup operations, the scene was turned over to law enforcement.

This incident highlights the importance of regional cooperation and the value of trained personnel working together to protect our communities.

🚨EMERGENCY INCIDENT 🚨

This morning at approximately 7:25 a.m., the City of Houma Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 600 block of Wortham Way.

While responding from South Houma Station located on St. Charles Street, the crew of Ladder 1 observed significant smoke visible from the intersection of Valhi Boulevard and immediately advised that they were responding to a working fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive interior attack while additional units responded to the scene. Due to morning traffic and ongoing construction throughout the area, some responding units experienced delays. Crews established a water supply, deployed attack lines, and forced entry into the home to begin fire suppression operations.

As more personnel arrived, Incident Command was established, and a 2nd alarm was requested due to the severity of the fire, bringing additional resources to the scene.

During firefighting operations, crews observed that the fire had vented through the roof near the rear of the residence, allowing rapid fire extension throughout the structure. The home's roof, which was equipped with solar panels, quickly became unstable as fire conditions worsened. Shortly thereafter, significant portions of the roof collapsed.

With structural integrity compromised, firefighters were ordered to withdraw from the building and transition to a defensive strategy. Aerial master streams were placed into operation to reach fire hidden beneath the collapsed roofing materials while command staff developed a revised suppression plan.

Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period conducting overhaul operations and attempting to salvage any recoverable property. Despite the efforts of responding crews, the home was deemed a total loss due to extensive fire, heat, and water damage.

Thankfully, the family was not home at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported.

The timing of the fire occurred during our normal shift change, resulting in personnel from two shifts being available to respond. This provided nearly double our typical staffing levels for a major incident of this magnitude.

Fire Chief Mark Stevenson wanted to commend the many off-duty and oncoming personnel who responded without hesitation and without administrative direction. Their willingness to answer the call provided much-needed support and relief to crews operating under challenging conditions.

The City of Houma Fire Department would also like to thank our partner agencies for their assistance:

Houma Police Department
Terrebonne Parish Communications District E-911
Acadian Ambulance
Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government-Electric and Solid Waste Divisions

Finally, we would like to extend a special thank you to the residents of the surrounding neighborhood who supported our firefighters throughout the incident and provided encouragement to crews working in the rehabilitation area.
