Happy Anniversary Bethel Baptist Church!

Established on October 16, 1891, by Reverend John Henry “Jack” Yates, Bethel Baptist Church holds an important place in the history of Freedmen’s Town and Black Houston.
Founded in the years following Emancipation, Bethel became part of a community shaped by Black faith, leadership, and collective resilience. Though the historic church building has endured destruction and loss, its legacy remains woven into the story of the neighborhood.

Join HFTC Executive Director Sharon L. Fletcher at Bethel Church Park as we explore the history of this landmark and reflect on why preserving the places and stories of Freedmen’s Town matters today.

We are proud to celebrate HFTC Executive Director Sharon L. Fletcher, who will receive the Lynn Eusan Alumni Award at the University of Houston’s 2026 Jazz Jam Brunch this Saturday, October 3.

Named in honor of Lynn C. Eusan, a pioneering student activist, journalist, and community organizer, the award recognizes individuals whose work reflects a commitment to community, culture, and service. Eusan made history in 1968 as the University of Houston’s first African American Homecoming Queen and played an instrumental role in efforts to establish what is now the university’s African American Studies Department.

We are honored to see Sharon recognized in Eusan’s name and alongside fellow community leaders whose work continues to create meaningful impact.

Join us for a morning of music, food, celebration, and recognition, featuring KJ Willis, Season 29 The Voice semifinalist, as we celebrate Mrs, Fletcher and this year’s award recipients.

As fall ushers in, we’re taking a moment to reflect on an unforgettable summer with CultureVerse Summer Crawl 2026 and Reading with a Rapper at Astros Youth Academy. 📚🏙️

It was one for the books. Students explored the history and culture of some of Houston’s historically Black neighborhoods—including Freedmen’s Town, Third Ward, and Fifth Ward—with stops that brought those histories to life, from our Heritage Brick Tour and Freedmen’s Town to Project Row Houses and the Deluxe Theater.

Throughout the summer, students learned how the histories of these communities continue to shape the city we live in today. They then put that learning into action, dreaming up and designing their own cities as a culminating project.

We’re grateful to everyone who showed up, shared knowledge, and helped make this summer one to remember.

Here’s to carrying these stories—and these lessons—into the next season. 🍂
