Troop 242 was featured in a recent Aaron on Scouting article. Charles B., an Eagle Scout from Troop 242, was a participant in the Houston-Chiba Scout Exchange program in 2017. Check out the article below...

Houston’s Troop 242 has produced more Black Eagle Scouts than any troop in the nation. Founded in 1965 by the Rev. William A. Lawson of Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, the troop has always focused on teaching Scouting values to boys in the Third Ward.

Last year, five Scouts earned their Eagle rank, bringing the troop’s total to 221. Aaron on Scouting recently spoke with Scoutmaster Sedric Myers about what drives their success — and how other units can follow their lead.

Every year, we receive the Peace Light of Bethlehem from Ukraine’s scout organizations, and today we continued this tradition. It is an important symbol of goodness and unity, one that carries special meaning now. From here, the light will be passed on to our defenders, to hospitals, schools, churches, and emergency responders.

I am grateful to the entire scouting community for their service and for supporting our people both here in Ukraine and abroad.

My gratitude also goes to the @ukrscout,@plastua, @ukrguides.

Glory to Ukraine! 12/11/2025

Ukrainian Scouts recently shared the Peace Light with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy who confirmed that it will be passed along to the country's military, hospitals, houses of worship, orphanages, and more.

In 2023 the SHAC International Committee shared the Peace Light to the Ukrainian community in Houston at the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church as Messenger of Peace project.

Update #13 - 45+ days since launch.
Follow the SHAC JOTA-JOTI Balloon with us at APRS.fi (Radio Call Sign W5BSA).

The balloon data still shows it is flying high at 48,000+ feet in altitude, but looks to be in virtually the same space as it was 12 days ago. Picture 2 shows the movement in the past 24 hours...not much, but it is still moving.

Update #12 - 33+ days since launch.
Follow the SHAC JOTA-JOTI Balloon with us at APRS.fi (Radio Call Sign W5BSA).

The balloon is still flying high at over 48,000 feet above the South American continent. It’s moving very slowly—only about 480 miles over the past seven days, traveling from a bend in the Mamorecillo River in Bolivia to the far northwest corner of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil.

In the last 24 hours, it even reversed course and nearly returned to its earlier position. A satellite map shows dense green forest stretching between these points.

How much longer will the balloon remain over Brazil?

Update #11 - 26+ days since launch.
Follow the SHAC JOTA-JOTI Balloon with us at APRS.fi (Radio Call Sign W5BSA).

The balloon is flying high at 47,100 feet over the South American continent. After crossing over land in Columbia a few days ago, it turned southeast and traveled over a corner of Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and is now over Bolivia. Picture 2 show a predicted flight path heading north. What a world traveler! Who can count how many countries it has flown over since Day 1?
