NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Kick-Off 05/13/2011

Don't forget to place a canned food item by your mailbox tomorrow!

A press conference was held on Fri., May 13 at the Downtown Post Office to kick-off the 19th Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which will be held on SATURDAY, MAY 14. This is the largest 1-day food drive in the nation, and all food collected locally benefits the Houston Food Bank.

The event included an NALC Bag Relay Race! Four-member teams from the food drive’s main sponsors – Kroger, Campbell’s, Houston Chronicle and Letter Carriers – raced to see who could fill the most Kroger shopping bags with Campbell’s products and run them to their team’s Houston Food Bank Red Barrel in just three minutes. The letter carrier won!! All of the food from the relay was donated to a food bank member agency.

Saturday, May 14, 2011 was proclaimed National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day in Houston by Mayor Annise Parker and in Harris County by Judge Ed Emmett.

Help us meet the 500,000 lb goal and place food at your mailbox tomorrow!!

Please teach your children the gift of giving, by letting them place the clothing and shoes they out-grow, into our blue Textile Recycling Boxes for a child in need.

Even at a very early age, kids want to know about recycling. In April, the U Gro Learning Center contacted WM about bringing a truck to the center. With the help of Palmyra DM Michael Devaney and RM Kenneth Dippolito, we were able to make that visit happen. These kids were invited to Touch-A-Truck where they learned about safety and how the truck operates. In the photo from left to right are Mike Devaney (district manager), all the kids, Cheryl Shields (WM community relations) and Kenny Dippolito (regional manager).

Thank you to the men and women who paid the ultimate price for our community's safety.

The Houston Police Department (HPD) will be hosting various events to honor and recognize the men and women in blue who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect and serve our city. National Police Week is a way for citizens to increase their awareness of the role of police officers in their communities. We urge everyone to participate and remember those brave men and women who have lost their lives protecting and serving our community.

During the week of May 16 - May 20, 2011, HPD will observe two National Police Week activities open to the public. On Wednesday, May 18, at 10 a.m., the HPD Police and Clergy Team will host a Day of Prayer outside HPD Headquarters at 1200 Travis, Houston 77002. On Friday, May 20, the annual HPD Memorial Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the HPD Memorial at 2400 Memorial Drive, Houston 77007.

The Houston Police Training Academy will be hosting weeklong pre-scheduled tours to give thousands of Houston area students a firsthand look at officer training. The HPD Museum, located in the lobby of HPD Headquarters at 1200 Travis, Houston 77002, is also open to anyone wishing to partake in HPD's rich and extensive history.

Why Recycling Matters…More | greenopolis recycling rewards Once Upon a Time, recycling was seen as boring. You had to do it because it was the right thing to do, you believed in it, it made a difference…you hoped. It was an article of faith among “greenies”, a means of survival for some homeless
