Quite an honor to attend Mayor Sylvester Turner's press conference yesterday, celebrating the success of his challenge to move 500 chronically homeless individuals into permanent supportive housing in 6 months. COMPASS and other community partners met the challenge, and then some. Kudos to the COMPASS Navigators, Annie and Lori. They are amazing!

Yesterday, one of our "navigation" clients - a chronically homeless man who is eligible for what's known as "permanent supportive housing" was at our office, waiting for Lori, his COMPASS "navigator." I assumed they were heading to DPS or the Housing Authority or one of the countless places they might need to go to help this one man get off the streets and into an apartment.
So I asked: "What's going on today?"
His answer was simply: "I'm going home."
It turned out it was move-in day. And last night, for the first time in a very long time, he slept in a bed in his own place. This is what COMPASS does, along with many other community partners.. Ending homelessness in Houston, one client at a time.

One of our clients will be reminded of this tonight: his first night in his own apartment, thanks to a collaborative effort that included "navigation" services by one of our dedicated case managers.
