East End Social Services (EESS) was started by Suzanne Garcia in 1982. Ms. Garcia knows first hand how difficult it can be for individuals not knowing how to navigate through the system, not knowing what, if any, services are available to help with their unmet needs. This is where her passion comes from in founding East End Social Services. She realized the deficit in basic needs of people living in poverty in Houston’s east end. The challenges of obtaining basic needs were not being met by any one existing agency in the community. Particularly, East End Social Services was created to offer individuals and families basic needs, such as food, clothing, bus passes and spiritual direction and support. Additionally, job readiness and retention training to assist with transition out of poverty is offered along with life skills training and referrals to other needed service organizations. Immediately after Hurricane Harvey in 2017 East End Social Services provided Emergency Disaster Relief Food Assistance to 15,556 families and distributed 228,654 pounds of Emergency Disaster Relief Food to those affected by the storm. East End Social Services currently offers emergency food and clothing to over 3000 individuals monthly. A collaborative agreement with Houston Food Bank helps to provide some of the amounts of food and nutritional assistance to the constituents in the community.
