The County Judge runs Commissioners Court, sets the county budget, and leads emergency response when the water starts rising. It’s the closest thing 4.9 million people have to a chief executive.

Letitia Plummer is your Democratic candidate running for County Judge!

She spent six years on Houston City Council as an at-large member representing the entire city, the first Muslim woman ever elected to that body. Her record there ran through the places where health, safety, and equity overlap: pushing for real inspections of dangerous apartment properties, working on food deserts, environmental health advocacy in the Fifth Ward, securing a permanent generator for the Kashmere Gardens Multi-Service Center, and launching Feed the Need during the pandemic. She’s helped residents through seven natural disasters.

She’s a dentist by training owing dentist practices in Houston and Pearland.

Why we’re backing her: ROADwomen was founded to put Democratic women in rooms where decisions get made. This is the biggest room in Harris County, and Letitia has spent six years proving she shows up for the neighborhoods that usually get skipped.

If she wins, she’ll be the first Black person and the first Muslim to hold the office.

Andrea Beall served as felony chief of the Child Fatality Division at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, responsible for half of all cases in the county where a child under 14 had been killed. It is the kind of work most lawyers never touch.

Andrea was an adjunct professor at South Texas College of Law Houston. And after the Harding Street raid, the City of Houston brought her into train police officers in Fourth Amendment search and seizure law, teaching the people with the badges where the constitutional lines are.

Andrea has a master’s degree in international development from Eastern University along with her bachealors from Baylor. Before any of it, she did community development work with nonprofits in Houston’s Second and Third Wards.

The Houston Chronicle endorsed her when she first ran, citing the breadth of her work and life experience.

Why we’re backing her: the 185th is a felony court, and felony courts need judges who actually know what a serious case looks like from the inside. Andrea does. She’s earned the second term!

She’s in the district courts section of your ballot, after the legislative races, before the county offices.

She spent nearly 30 years in a Texas classroom. Then the state fired her for defending her students.

Michelle Williams is president of the Houston Education Association. Her fight with HISD’s state-appointed leadership started when she pushed the district to honor students’ individualized education plans and provide appropriate instruction. Two separate independent hearing examiners reviewed her case and sided with her. In April, the appointed board of managers voted to terminate her anyway.

So she’s taking it to Austin.

What she’s running on: repealing vouchers and actually funding public schools. Fixing educators’ working conditions. Flood mitigation for a part of the county that keeps getting hit. Expanding access to healthcare. And restoring the reproductive rights Texas women have lost.

Why we’re backing her: ROADwomen exists to elect Democratic women who won’t back down, with a particular commitment to candidates who’ll defend reproductive rights. Michelle already lost her job for standing her ground. That’s not a campaign promise. That’s a record.

📍 HD127 covers Humble, Huffman, Kingwood, and Atascocita. She’s only the second Democrat to run here in twelve years.

Within months of taking the bench, Judge Leah Shapiro became the first judge in Harris County to stop shackling children in her courtroom.

Across Texas, kids were routinely restrained at the wrists and ankles when they appeared before a judge, including children charged with low-level offenses and children with no record at all. Judge Shapiro ended it in the 315th, then worked with the Supreme Court of Texas Children’s Commission to push the issue statewide.

That’s not the only thing she built. She co-founded and presides over CARE Court, Creating Acceptance Recovery Empowerment, a specialty court serving children who’ve been victims of s*x trafficking. She piloted Harris County’s first Dual Status Docket, for kids caught in both the child welfare system and the delinquency system at the same time, so their cases stop being handled by two systems that don’t talk to each other.

Leah was an assistant district attorney first, then assistant public defender in the juvenile division and in the felony mental health court.

Earlier this year the Houston Chronicle called her a relentless reformer and a model for who voters should want leading a juvenile courtroom.

Why ROADwomen are backing her: this is the bench that decides whether a kid’s worst year becomes their whole life. She has spent seven years making that courtroom better!
