Congratulations to Carnegie Vanguard High School junior Armaanuddin Mohammed on earning the People’s Choice Innovation Award and the Certificate of Innovation at Space Center Houston’s Eco Innovation Challenge!

Armaanuddin’s award-winning project, Urban ThermoLab, tackles one of Houston’s biggest challenges—extreme heat in parking lots—through innovative solutions including reflective materials, permeable surfaces, and strategic shade to reduce surface temperatures and stormwater runoff.

His project was recognized for its strong connection to the Houston community, local impact, and vision for a more sustainable future. As a result of this outstanding achievement, Armaanuddin also received a scholarship to Space Center University, an elite NASA-led STEM program.

We are incredibly proud of Armaanuddin for using innovation and creativity to make a difference in our community. 🚀🌎✨

Thank you, Vivian, for helping make the CVHS campus more bird-friendly! Because birds cannot see glass, window collisions are extremely common in urban environments—especially in Houston, which is considered the second most dangerous city in the United States for migrating birds. Birds that collide with windows often sustain serious injuries that can be fatal.

Vivian’s Stop the Strikes project was created to reduce the number of bird collisions occurring at the high-strike second-floor conference room windows. This past summer, she installed bird-safe window clings designed to make the glass visible to migrating birds. Since the installation, there have been no reported bird strikes at these windows throughout both the fall and spring migration seasons.
