Last month, Medic 45 A-Shift Paramedic E. Dickerson and Advanced EMT E. Stricklin responded to assist a gentleman having weakness and shortness of breath. During their assessment, it was found that he had an unstable heart rate and needed urgent medical attention. Despite this, he was very adamant that he did not need or want to go to a hospital. Our crew spent a lengthy amount of time on scene encouraging him, and finally convinced him to change his mind. The next day, he received a pacemaker.

Today, this patient is doing much better and he came by our station to personally thank the crew for taking great care of him, and he gives them credit for saving his life!

This is a great example of our crews providing excellent care to the community, and we are so proud! Way to go, A-Shift!

On the morning of March 10th, 2025, Mrs. Shynett and her friend were walking on the trail at a local park. Mrs. Shynett suddenly became unresponsive and fell to the concrete into cardiac arrest. Her friend and several bystanders quickly rendered aid by calling 911 and following instructions on how to perform CPR until first responders arrived. Our response partners at Sheldon Community Fire & Rescue arrived initially and began providing care, which included a shock using their AED. Our medic units arrived shortly after, began advanced care, and ultimately achieved a return of pulse on Mrs. Shynett on scene prior to transport.

We now know that Mrs. Shynett had multiple heart vessel blockages, required a quadruple bypass surgery, and she spent 29 days in the hospital. Ten months later, she has a miraculous recovery story to tell. Her words are, “Thank you for using your medical training to save my life. Today I feel amazing.”

Yesterday, our team was extremely honored with the opportunity to reunite with Mrs. Shynett along with her family, friends, fellow first responders, 911 dispatchers from East Harris County Emergency Communications, and hospital partner Memorial Hermann Northeast. The pictures below perfectly illustrate the “chain of survival” in which multiple teams from different organizations worked together with the same goal - to save a life. We are proud of the strong work displayed on this call by all!

This week, a group of our members traveled to San Antonio to attend the Critical Care Skills program at the Centre for Emergency Health Sciences.

This is a unique, nationally recognized, hands on training specifically designed to target high value, low frequency emergent skills in the ultimate training environment. The program is “procedurally based and anatomically centered” utilizing fresh and embalmed cadavers, mannequins and highly experienced faculty, all blended in a state of the art facility.

In support of the ongoing flood recovery occuring in parts of Central Texas, we feel honored to have partnered with The Wisch Auto Group in their effort stepping forward to provide aid in affected communities, specifically the Hunt area, by donating essential food and supplies. The food and supplies pictured here is just at a small portion of the amount of donations received from multiple organizations. Folks from the The Wisch Auto Group traveled to Hunt to cook and provide warm meals and supplies to hundreds of people.

South Lake Houston EMS is deeply committed to standing with our communities in times of need, and our thoughts remain with everyone impacted by the flood. 💙

EMS WEEK 2025! 🚑 💙

We had Let's Hibachi here each day cooking lunch, Massage Heights set up in our training room giving full body massages, and all of the crews had a turn on our popular “Spin the Wheel!”

We are so grateful to have such an amazing team providing service to the community, and we were very happy to recognize, celebrate, and thank them this week for the outstanding work they do each and every day!
