The Short Flight by Santos-Dumont That Preceded a Historic Moment.

On September 13, 1906, Alberto Santos-Dumont carried out a short flight that helped pave the way for one of the most important moments in aviation history. At the Bagatelle Field in Paris, the *14-bis* managed to travel about 8 meters through the air, staying approximately 1 meter above the ground.
It may not seem like much today, but that result demonstrated that the aircraft was making progress. Days earlier, Santos-Dumont had realized that the 24-horsepower Antoinette engine did not provide enough power and decided to use a more powerful, 50-horsepower version.
Each attempt allowed for the correction of issues regarding stability, power, and control, bringing the inventor closer to his ultimate goal.
Testing continued before the public and French experts. On October 23, the Brazilian managed to fly about 60 meters, reaching an altitude of approximately 3 meters. The feat was officially observed by the Aero-Club de France and earned Santos-Dumont the Archdeacon Prize.
A few weeks later, on November 12, the *14-bis* covered an even greater distance, cementing its place in history.
The flight on September 13, therefore, was not Santos-Dumont's most famous one. It was a short yet decisive step, illustrating how great technological achievements often begin with seemingly modest tests.

SEPTEMBER 7 — INDEPENDENCE AND THE EXAMPLE OF THE *PRACINHAS* đŸ«ĄđŸ‡§đŸ‡·

September 7th marks one of the most important moments in Brazil's history: Independence, proclaimed in 1822. More than just a date on the calendar, it symbolizes the building of a free nation—one conscious of its identity, its values, and its commitment to its own history.

Centuries later, another generation of Brazilians would demonstrate, on foreign soil, that love for one's country is also revealed through courage, duty, and sacrifice. During World War II, thousands of men and women took part in Brazil's war effort, and soldiers of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) crossed the Atlantic to fight in Italy.

The *Pracinhas*, as the Brazilian soldiers were affectionately known, left behind their families, their hometowns, and their daily lives to fulfill a mission far from home. On Italian battlefields, they faced the cold, fear, longing for home, and the perils of war. Many returned bearing the scars of that experience. Others never had the chance to come back.

The story of Independence and the journey of the *Pracinhas* belong to different eras, yet they are united by the same sentiment: a commitment to Brazil.

September 7th reminds us of those who helped build an independent Brazil. The FEB reminds us of those who, more than a century later, carried Brazil's name beyond its borders and honored the nation on the battlefield.

Therefore, celebrating Independence should mean more than just looking to the past. It must also mean preserving the memory of those who, in different times, had the courage to serve their country.

May new generations learn our history, respect our symbols, and never allow the Brazilians who did their part when the nation needed them to be forgotten. From the Cry of Ipiranga to the battlefields of Italy, Brazil's history was written by Brazilians who believed that the Homeland is worthy of our respect, our courage, and our remembrance.

đŸ‡§đŸ‡· SEPTEMBER 7 — INDEPENDENCE, HOMELAND, AND REMEMBRANCE.

Those who fought for Brazil must never be forgotten.

Muitos retornaram trazendo consigo as marcas daquela experiĂȘncia.

104 years ago, Brazil gave voice to its own history: "You shall see that a son of yours does not flee the fight, nor does he who adores you fear death itself."
đŸ‡§đŸ‡· On September 6, 1922—on the eve of the Independence Centennial celebrations—the lyrics by Joaquim OsĂłrio Duque-Estrada were officially adopted as the words to the Brazilian National Anthem by decree of President EpitĂĄcio Pessoa.

The melody, composed decades earlier by Francisco Manuel da Silva, was already a fixture of official ceremonies and had spanned various eras of Brazilian history.

Duque-Estrada’s lyrics—written years prior and subsequently revised—were chosen to permanently accompany the melody that was already so familiar to Brazilians.

Since then, those words have transcended generations.

They are sung in schools, at ceremonies, in stadiums, and during the many moments when Brazil gathers to reflect on what unites the nation.

đŸŽ¶ “They heard, from the placid banks of the Ipiranga
”

More than just a song, the National Anthem has become part of the Brazilian collective memory—a symbol whose verses embody the history, dreams, and sense of belonging of a people.

đŸ‡§đŸ‡· May we never lose respect for our history and for the symbols that represent our homeland.

BRAZIL'S INDEPENDENCE
On that day—September 2, 1822—the political decision that would pave the way for the birth of a new nation had begun to take shape.
Exactly 204 years ago, Brazil was not yet officially independent. While Dom Pedro was in the Province of SĂŁo Paulo to resolve a serious political crisis and ensure regional stability, Rio de Janeiro was receiving worrying new reports from Portugal. The Lisbon Cortes persisted in trying to strip Brazil of the autonomy it had gained in recent years, demanding that the prince obey Portuguese decrees and return to Europe.
Dom Pedro, however, was not in Rio de Janeiro. Portugal refused to accept Brazil forging its own path.
A decision had to be made. The young prince was only 23 years old.
He was traveling through the interior of the Province of SĂŁo Paulo, surrounded by his entourage, preoccupied with political disputes, Brazil's instability, and mounting pressure from Portugal. And as the Brazil of 1822 moved toward one of its most pivotal moments, a question began to loom over the country:
How long can a nation accept having decisions about its destiny made by others?
