After two decades of service, 1stSgt Candelario retired at Houston City Hall, surrounded by his Marines and family. He received the flag one last time, then took a knee to hand it to his mother—a tribute to the sacrifices behind the uniform. Fair winds and following seas, First Sergeant!

The Purple Heart is the military’s oldest award and was created by General George Washington in 1782 as a Badge of Military Merit to recognize heroic acts by his troops.
The Marine we honored, earned this award during the Iraq conflict in 2004, a time of immense challenge and hardship. Through it all, he demonstrated the same tenacity and fortitude that have defined Marines for generations.
It was an honor to present PFC Scott his medal, not only as a symbol of gratitude from our nation but as a reminder of the selflessness and bravery that allows us to stand free today.
