𝑯𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝑫𝒂𝒚 from 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒏 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 68!

Today, we celebrate all the dads who lead, protect, teach, and inspire—both at home and in the 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆.

To the fathers of Station 68, the dads across the Houston Fire Department, the single dads carrying the load of both parents, the stepdads who stepped up, and the father figures who make a difference every day — 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮!

The lessons you teach, the sacrifices you make, and the love you give leaves a lasting impact on the lives of those who look up to you.

Wishing you a day filled with family, laughter, and the appreciation you’ve earned.

𝑯𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒚 𝑭𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓’𝒔 𝑫𝒂𝒚!

Today we remember and honor the legacy of the members of Engine Co. 68 & Engine Co. 51 (A-Shift) who made the supreme sacrifice while battling a 5-Alarm fire at the Southwest Inn on May 31st, 2013.

We must also remember, honor and pray for the families, friends, and brother & sister firefighters who still mourn and grieve their loss.

Today we lost a true legend.

Engine 68 (C-Shift) Captain Clifford Reed (ret.) has answered his final alarm.

If you were ever lucky enough to cross paths with Capt. Reed, you’ve got a story to tell. His knowledge and experience were unmatched, yet he carried himself with a quiet, humble presence that earned the respect of everyone around him. Across the Houston Fire Department, he was known affectionately as the “FIREWALKER.”

Captain Reed was the innovator behind the Reed Hood—a life-saving piece of protective equipment that allowed firefighters to push deeper into dangerous conditions to rescue those in need. In a remarkable act of selflessness, he gave up his personal rights to profit from the Reed Hood, ensuring that Houston firefighters would always have access to the best protection possible.

His dedication to the fire service was unwavering—but even greater was his love for his family.

Please keep Captain Reed’s family, friends, and brothers and sisters in the fire service in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Feel free to share your stories and pictures of Captain Reed!!

Rest easy Captain Reed, we'll see you on the fire floor.

Not to be outdone by the A-Shift, under the direction of Sr. Captain Schroeder, the B-shift fired up the saws for some Ventilation training with their newest rookie.

Keep in mind, these FFs have to buy the OSB/plywood out of their own pockets!!

A look back at Station 68 over the years..

1973 - Station 68 officially opens. The first engine assigned to the station was a 1968 Ward LaFrance. This pumper was transferred to 68’s from Station 8, located on Crawford at Polk in downtown Houston. It was equipped with a 1000 gpm pump and a 5-speed standard transmission. The engine was a Cummings diesel. That was unique due to the fact that all other diesel-powered apparatus in the Houston Fire Department at the time had Detroit diesel engines.

1974 - The first ladder truck was placed in-service at 68’s. It was a 1970 Ward LaFrance that was transferred from Station 21, located on S Main near Loop 610.

1975 - Ambulance 68 is placed into service.

1976 - Station 68 becomes a district house due to a realignment of districts. The district house had been located at Station 48, located on Chimney Rock at Burdine. The Chiefs assigned to 48’s were transferred to 68’s. The Chief’s radio call number was #114. District Chiefs Blackmon, Olgetree, and Ross are believed to be the first District Chiefs assigned to 68’s.

Today, Station 68 is one of the busiest firehouses for working fires and total runs.
