Criminals love crypto kiosks because they turn your cash into hard-to-trace cryptocurrency. The transactions happen fast, and they're confusing and often irreversible.

The scams often start with a call, text or on-screen warning from someone pretending to be a bank fraud investigator, a tech support rep or law enforcement. Then, they pressure you to withdraw cash and deposit it at a specific crypto kiosk in a store or gas station.

According to the FBI, scams involving these kiosks led to more than $333 million in reported losses in 2025. A 2024 FBI report found that adults 60+ accounted for over 85% of reported fraud losses involving crypto kiosks. Once the money is sent, the transfer often can’t be reversed.

If anyone tells you to pay through a crypto kiosk, treat it as a scam and contact law enforcement or the AARP Fraud Watch Network Helpline at 877-908-3360 for support and guidance.

Save and share this post to help others recognize these types of scams.
