There will be a special meeting of the Miner County Commissioners on Thursday, October 15th for the sole purpose of approving the 5-year Highway & Bridge Improvement (Transportation) Plan, the public hearing for which was previously held on Tuesday, September 8th.

Those that have been in the courthouse in the last few days may have noticed a few of the offices there blowing up with purple! We are proud supporters of the Safe Place of Eastern South Dakota and are participating in their Paint the Town Purple initiative again this year. We'd also like to thank Miner Details for joining in with the purple lights in their window and encourage other Miner County businesses to follow along to raise awareness for the victims of domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. It's the month also associated with Halloween, where people seek out places and events to be scared on purpose, but for some, fear isn't a seasonal thrill or a fun pastime, it's a daily reality.

So while enjoying the Halloween season, please also remember that there are actual monsters that live among us every day. If you're able, please donate to the Safe Place of Eastern SD to help someone take their first steps toward safety and healing, because no one should have to live in fear all year.

Secretary Johnson Announces That Absentee Voting Begins Today!

(Pierre, S.D.) – Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson would like to provide important information regarding absentee voting in the November 3, 2026 General Election.

The absentee voting period for South Dakota’s 2026 General Election begins today, September 18th, 2026. To request an absentee ballot, voters must submit an absentee ballot application form to their county auditor. Absentee ballot application forms may be requested from the county auditor or found on the Secretary of State’s website: https://sdsos.gov/elections-voting/voting/absentee-voting.aspx. To account for mail processing and delivery times with the USPS, voters are encouraged to request an absentee ballot as soon as possible and return the ballot to the county auditor allowing sufficient time for mail delivery.

Voters may verify whether they have already requested an absentee ballot and check the status of their absentee ballot by contacting their county auditor or searching the Voter Information Portal (VIP) on the Secretary of State’s website: https://vip.sdsos.gov/VIPLogin.aspx.

Voters submitting an absentee ballot application form must include a photocopy of an acceptable photo identification card or have the form notarized, as per SDCL 12-18-6.1. Acceptable photo identification cards include a South Dakota driver’s license or non-driver ID card, tribal ID, passport, student ID issued by a South Dakota high school or college, or any other photo ID issued by the United States government. Voters also have the option to vote absentee in person up to the day before the election or vote in person on Election Day. For those looking to vote absentee in person, please contact your county auditor for office hours as hours may vary. On Election Day, polls will be open from 7:00am to 7:00pm local time. Information on polling locations and sample ballots may be found on the Voter Information Portal (VIP) on the Secretary of State’s website.

“Absentee voting provides South Dakotans with a secure and convenient way to make their voices heard,” said Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson. “Whether voting absentee by mail, absentee in person, or at the polls on Election Day, I encourage every voter to plan ahead, review the requirements, and allow enough time for their ballot to be received.”

SECRETARY JOHNSON CELEBRATES CONSTITUTION DAY

(Pierre, S.D.) – Secretary of State Monae L. Johnson is celebrating Constitution Day on September 17 and encouraging South Dakotans to reflect on the rights and responsibilities established by the United States Constitution.

Constitution Day marks the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. The Constitution established the framework of the federal government and remains the foundation for many of the rights exercised by Americans today, including participation in the election process.

“Constitution Day is an opportunity to remember that our system of government depends on citizens understanding and participating in it,” Secretary Johnson said. “One of the most important ways South Dakotans take part in that system is through voting.”

The Secretary of State’s Office encourages South Dakotans to take time this week to review their voter registration information, learn more about the upcoming election, and become familiar with the resources available through the state’s election website.

Absentee voting for the November 3, 2026 General Election begins this Friday, September 18th. Voters may check their registration, review election information, and access voter resources through the Secretary of State’s VIP portal on our website at https://vip.sdsos.gov/VIPLogin.aspx.

“Whether someone votes absentee or on Election Day, being informed and prepared is an important part of participating and protecting our Constitutional Republic,” Secretary Johnson said.
