Howe Caverns The largest show cave in the Northeast. Howe Caverns is an underground world of natural wonder. As you exit into the Vestibule, your imagination takes hold.

Imagine stepping into an elevator that takes you 156 feet below the Earth's surface. When the elevator stops, the doors open into a prehistoric underground cavern six million years in the making. The air down here is different. A constant 52 degrees Fahrenheit and 70-75% humidity, year round. As your eyes adjust to the underworld, shadows hide secrets in every crack and crevice. Every sound echos off the walls and ceiling, reminding you of just how deep you have descended and what surprises await you in this underground wonder! You don't have to be a serious caver or spelunker to appreciate the geology of Howe Caverns. Your specially trained tour guide will help you negotiate the cave and learn more about the magnificent limestone stalagmites and flowstone, and the tremendous conservation effort underway to protect and preserve Howe Caverns for future generations. When you've completed your tour, come back to the surface and mine for gemstones or crack open a geode to reveal your treasure at the Howe Caverns Mining Co. You will also find above ground our Gift Shops, Rock Shop, Sweet Shop with homemade fudge and truffles, and our Cafe with delicious home-cooked food. Plan your visit to New York’s coolest getaway soon!

Most fossils "hide out" in sedimentary rock. When tiny bits of rocks and minerals (called sediment) join together over millions of years, they become sedimentary rock. Plants and animals that become sandwiched in this sediment eventually turn into fossils. Here Brian is showing us what he calls a “death sweep”. This sweep lies in the Devonian Period. Devonian Period, in geologic time is sometimes called, “The Age of The Fishes” because of the diverse and abundant types of creatures that lived in the Devonian Sea. Here he is pointing out a massive sea sponge and in some of the other photos you can see tiny shells 🐚, plants, coral 🪸 and trilobites. To answer that age old question, yes, we do have many fossils in our cave- ones that are hundreds of millions of years old! Happy National Fossil Day!

🚨ATTENTION, TEACHERS!🚨HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO WIN A FREE TRIP TO HOWE CAVERNS FOR YOUR CLASS/GRADE?

We’ve got a challenge for you and this one comes with a VERY cool prize! Deep beneath the Earth’s surface, in a world of winding passages and mysterious formations, who knows what strange creatures might be lurking? Well, we’re about to find out and YOU get to invent them! We are inviting classrooms to dream up, design, and build their very own imaginary CAVE CREATURES!
We’re talking actual, three-dimensional creations- not drawings or computer-generated images. They must be REAL creatures made from whatever wonderfully imaginative materials you can dream up! Give your creature twelve legs, three heads, fur, giant teeth, wings, a face only a mother could love, you decide! Make it beautiful. Make it bizarre. Make it weird. Make it absolutely ridiculous!

THEN SEND IT TO US!

We will be displaying your creations in our Main Lodge, sharing them online, and inviting our guests and followers to vote for their favorites!

Bill and Mary’s love story began right here at Howe Caverns on September 23, 1972, when they became our 91st wedding couple! (As of today, there have been 750 weddings here at Howe!) Now, 54 years later, they have built a beautiful life together filled with faith, family, and many wonderful memories. Over the years, Bill and Mary raised four children, two sons and two daughters, and their family has continued to grow. Today, they are proud grandparents to nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild on the way!

Both Bill and Mary continue to work and serve others. Bill delivers meals to people who are unable to leave their homes in Madison County, New York. Mary worked as a teacher’s aide for 17 years and is now doing something she is deeply passionate about, working as a caregiver, a role she absolutely loves.

When asked about the secret to their 54-year marriage, Bill and Mary say it is, first and foremost, their faith, followed closely by the love and support of their family and friends.

Howe Caverns has remained a special part of their story. They returned to celebrate both their 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries, and today, they visited once again with two of their great-grandchildren, Gracie and Weston. Gracie had previously visited on a school field trip, but this was Weston’s very first visit.

We are honored that Bill and Mary continue to include Howe in their family’s story. Thank you so much for visiting! 🫶🏼❤️ Congratulations on 54 wonderful years of marriage! Wishing you many more years of good health and happiness 🥂
