The October Member spotlight has landed on Engineer/EMT John Dunworth. John came to us in April of 2026 when he was hired as the Full-time Firefighter for A-Shift. John brings 28 years of service with him. He started as a Jr Firefighter in New Jersey then eventually settled down in Oregon. He has spent 18 years with the Lebanon Fire District where he currently serves as a volunteer Lieutenant, he also has worked for Woodburn Ambulance for 7 years as a combination of Full time and a Part-time employee. Here are some questions we asked John so you can get to know him better.

"Why did you become a Firefighter"
"I've loved the sight of a fire engine ever since I was little. Fast forwarding to my teenage years, I had the opportunity to join my hometown fire department as a Junior Firefighter at the age of 16. I was hooked. That opportunity gave me a sense of direction and purpose. The opportunity to learn the skills I've learned, made the friends I've made, and be part of something bigger than myself has been an amazing experience."

What are your goals as a Firefighter?

"While I've only been with Hubbard Fire for a short time, I've been fortunate to have unique opportunities to experience the job from different perspectives unlike I've had before. I've been given the ability to not only share my previous experiences and skill sets with others; I've also been pushed to learn new skills so I can not only better myself but also be better prepared to serve the community as best I can as both a firefighter and EMT. My goals are to continue to step out of my comfort zone and into new areas like incident command and public education."

What are your hobbies outside of the Fire service?

"I enjoy spending time with my children. Watching them grow and develop has been such an honor. I also enjoy listening to music. I also enjoy working out, especially running. I also like working on my model trains in my garage."

What is your favorite quote?

"Strength does not come from winning
Your struggles develop your strengths
When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender
That is strength" -unknown

Member Spotlight

Our next member spotlight lands on FF/EMT Mika Yandall. Mika joined the Hubbard Fire District in November of 2024. Mika previously volunteered at the Aurora Fire District. Mika currently serves as one of our seasonal firefighters for the summertime. During the rest of the year Mika continues to volunteer at Hubbard Fire and works full-time as a EMT with Woodburn Ambulance. Mika is currently working becoming an apparatus operator for the district. We asked Mika a couple of questions so you can get to know him better.

Why do you want to be a Firefighter?
"I grew up riding bikes, skateboards, playing sports and was no stranger to injuries. The few injuries I've had required first responders, I remember them being so calm and comforting to my mother. I decided at a young age that I wanted to be that person that you can lean on and trust on your worst day and I work to bring that same level of comfort and care to people that I was shown as a kid"

What are your goals as a firefighter?
"At Hubbard Fire, I've been given the opportunity and freedom to hone my craft as a firefighter and bring value to the communities we serve through fire and life safety education and public events. As a firefighter, I'm excited to learn about different perspectives to certain skills we preform, how complex situations can be simplified from an incident commander's perspective, and to improve my public outreach skills."

What are your hobbies outside of the fire service?
"I love the outdoors. Campling, fishing, hiking, all while spending time with my family. The occasional jujitsu roll when I get the chance."

What's your favorite quote?
"It's not what you preach, it's what you tolerate" -Jocko Willink

On August 4th, 2026, at 6:01 p.m. The Hubbard Fire District was dispatched to a reported grass fire at 3rd and J Streets in Hubbard. HFD Engine 87 arrived with a crew of four at 6:05 and the fire was controlled at 6:13.

The fire was the result of downed powerlines.

The Hubbard Fire District was assisted by Tender 21 from the Woodburn Fire District.

This quick response, and good outcome, is the result of our community support on the May 2025 Levy and a generous staffing grant from the Office of the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
