Local law enforcement will hold an active attacker drill from 8 a.m. to noon, Friday, Oct. 23, at Lockheed Martin on Lufkin’s west loop.
While it occurs on the Lockheed Martin campus, fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency crews will stage on the Loop. Crews will close the outside lane of the north bound side of the loop from Frank Street / Highway 94 and Lotus Lane during that time.
“This is being planned for the least interference with local traffic,” said Jackie Zimmerman, Lufkin Police public relations specialist. “We will start blocking the one lane at 8 a.m., to ensure work and school traffic has had time to get to their locations.” investigators
Lufkin Police Department officials are working on this drill in conjunction with the Angelina County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Department of Transportation, Lufkin Fire Department, Texas Department of Emergency Management, South East Texas Regional Advisory Council, with the Texas Board of Criminal Justice – Office of the Inspector General, Iglesia Comunidad de Gracia church, and Woodland Heights Medical Center.
This drill allows every entity that would be involved in an actual event to practice and coordinate efforts before an event occurs, Zimmerman said. It offers everyone hands-on experience, and each will be able to evaluate the event to determine if any changes to their responses ned to be revised or to reset best practices ahead of a potential event.
More than 30 people will be involved in the drill, and that includes individuals who will act as victims. Some will be taken to the emergency room to ensure a full simulation.
“We want our community to be assured we are sharpening our skills and knowledge through this drill with all of our fellow public servants so we are all prepared should something happen in our community, “Zimmerman said.
Please watch the Lufkin PD, Lufkin Fire, and City of Lufkin social media pages for reminders of this event. “We appreciate your patience and encourage you to share the posts and the information that this is only a drill.”
And a shout out to Shafer Funeral Home for their participation.
